Looks like the registry ATS is reversing a previous change.

I got that e-mail as well.
I think it's a big deal for World collectors especially.
So, will PCGS follow suit?

That will be a cold day in.....you know where! And a day when I leave the PCGS Registry. The fact that PCGS allows only PCGS coins in it's Registry is what makes it the very best Registry out there!
I am excited about the change. Some of the sets I enjoy collecting are WAY more common in PCGS holders(Barber series). Now it will be easier to complete the registry sets I started back before the change took place.
Guess they lost that battle! Of course it seems PCGS also lost the battle with CAC.

So if Coca Cola was PCGS and Pepsi was NGC, Pepsi is now allowing Coca-Cola to participate within its registry?
Since Registries are a great marketing tool, I DISAGREE. A registry should go after the BEST example. If you have a PCGS 68 and a NGC 69 exists, in spite of the argument that the services grade differently, you lose!

Correct! Effective immediately too. Just tried adding two PCGS coins to one of my NGC sets. Just pending approval from an administrator.
For many years; as many as I can remember; NGC allowed PCGS coin in the US and world registries. In 2012 they were removed from the world registry sets entirely, and then about two/three years ago US sets suspended the addition of PCGS graded material however the PCGS coins in those US sets stayed grandfathered in just no new additions except NGC graded coins. This sets the US registry sets back to the way they had been prior to the suspension.

They ran me off their registries once with the previous decision. I have no desire to put in the effort again. It sure didn’t do anything good for my perception of their brand.
Nope....At one time, I preferred the NGC registry just for ability to include PCGS and be "complete".
Now, with few exceptions, I've already crossed what I wanted/needed to PCGS, and had enough "bad experiences" in the process to end up preferring PCGS. (I really had no preference before).
To be honest, in my case, right or wrong, NGC disallowing PCGS was a great marketing move....for PCGS.
Now it's time for them to also allow PCGS coins in emir World registries.

This sounds - to me - like a defensive effort to promote participation in their registry program....I do not believe PCGS will do this....Cheers, RickO
Not sure how I feel about this, or even if I care anymore. I was well on my way to completing a number of sets ATS, and at the time I was less picky about which holder. When the decision came down that certain holders were no longer welcome, I had to decide which holders to prefer. I did my research, and one of the two companies seemed to have a better market reputation, so I started acquiring that company’s graded coins only. I haven’t added a coin to my registry ATS since the 2017 (I think?) business decision was announced.
After the ATS announcement a few years back, I started creating a number of PCGS registry set, and I have really started enjoying the Album capability. Not sure what I will do, if anything, with any left over sets ATS.

My feelings too. To bring my old NGC registries up to date is just too much work.

I read it thought it was funny and got it, but I'm not totally surprised it was deleted.
So a question for you @lkeigwin and @BryceM did you both delete your sets or just leave them unfinished? If you left them up then it wouldn't really be much work to pick up where you left off. If you have to recreate the sets from scratch then I can understand your hesitancy. Not saying you should or shouldn't just wondering.

I've been thinking about this since I got the email. I have a couple sets in both. I will not enter our host graded coins in my NGC registry sets. Hoping our hosts do not allow " their " coins in PCGS registry sets. In my admitted limited experience with both I see a disparity in grading. I'll let my sets speak for themselves.
@coinbuf, I would guess that I've sold a few dozen bust halves and purchased 100+, since the NGC ban. Many others have been crossed or regraded/reconsidered. A half dozen NGC registry sets are affected.
My small cent collections (IHC and wheat cents) were consigned so I will probably delete those. I expect that to be easy enough.

Yep. Too little too late.
NGC was already behind in PCGS in terms of marketing, but my experience is that the decision to remove PCGS coins alienated a large number of collectors and hurt the brand. The premiums for many NGC registry quality coins tanked thereafter. I think it is far too late. The PCGS-NGC price spread was already large before, but it only increased after the decision IMO.
I will have to check the app on my phone. I wish I could have ngc holders in my PCGS register set. I add the coins sometimes but it’s not the same when trying to build sets.

I deleted all of mine the day of the announcement. The majority of my coins were PCGS anyhow. They obviously didn’t need me and I didn’t need them.
I have had a negative perception of that brand for many years.

NGC's completely unfounded attack on PCGS and the removal of PCGS coins from their registries was probably one of the single biggest missteps I have ever seen a TPG make. They did not shoot themselves in the foot. They cut their perfectly healthy foot off and fed it to rabid wolves. It was a moronic decision and it is far too late to put that cat back in the bag, and it has probably cost them a lot of money...

It is a curious move which I really don't see any upside from a financial standpoint, and as many have expressed the decision by NGC several years back was met with a considerable amount of backlash at the time and during the past years. It may have been a counter move to the CAC registry sets here, maybe the management of NGC sees an upside that I don't. Overall I think its best for the hobby to have at least two strong options for grading, a monopoly in any industry has proven to be a very bad thing.

I had a NGC Registry set of 7070 half way complete with both NGC and PCGS in 2017 and it cost me about $500 to cross or sell the NGC coins and my completed 7070 set in now 100% PCGS. I will never start another NGC Registry.
I wonder if NGC will start CAC only sets... It would make so many posters happy to have a registry with both PCGS and NGC CAC only coins based on some of the posts here I have read through the years.
What happens if the PCGS Registry decided to go CAC only and discontinue recognition, for set purposes, of the "other" coins?
I get the feeling that NGC cannot start CAC only sets, the wording of PGCS's press release indicates that the arrangement is exclusive:
"PCGS is proud to have this exclusive partnership which includes a connection to the CAC database, allowing us to cross reference coins to ensure legitimacy of both the holders and stickers. "
The way I read it is that possibly some compensation may have been given in order to obtain this exclusive right and if so then NGC may not have the option to access the CAC database. If I'm reading this correctly then its a very disappointing move by CAC, after all the little green bean is supposed to represent a top level coin regardless of the plastic.
For certain I'm one who would welcome a mixed CAC only registry, it makes perfect sense to coin collectors but would rankle the plastic snobs. You know like many people here.

I hope that's not the case. My impression was that the exclusivity may have applied to the custom APIs required to access the CAC database; however, NGC had manually verified PCGS coins for years without PCGS ever giving NGC access to its database if I recall correctly.
The data bases of PCGS,NGC, and CAC can all be accessed with probably a very easy program as long as it's publically available...which it is now.
Personally, I was real happy about the announcement. Now, I can complete my full MS Walker set that I started in 2005. I was going to finish it, anyway, but I just couldn't display it, in any ONE place. I'd say about 70% of my coins were PCGS and the rest NGC. The years after the change ATS; I bought a lot of PCGS duplicate coins and raised the percentage to about 85% PCGS. That was crazy and I realized that I would NEVER be able to get to 100% PCGS! But lets face it, there are good coins in both slabs. I would never be able to find better examples, of my 8 early Walkers, that are in NGC slabs, unless I wanted to pay a fortune and possibly have to buy the next grade up. No way! And, besides, crossing and cracking is too risky, time-consuming and expensive. I also don't want to ruin my vintage NGC slabs.

What would be the point of that? Does it cut into PCGS's revenue that much compared to the cost of acquiring it?
Monopolies are never good. They stifle innovation, exercise artificial control on pricing, lead to poor quality control, and in the end hurt consumers. Competition promotes strength in nature and in business too.
