Well circulated gold

Got around to taking pictures of a few coins yesterday and took the opportunity to image this one. I bought this from a guy in my hometown, Grass Valley CA. For those who might not know, Grass Valley and its neighbor town Nevada City were home to many emigrants who mined the rivers and hills from the 1849 gold rush on. The guy who sold me this one mentioned he had "found it" locally, as in, in the ground, but of course wouldn't tell me any more details. Who knows!?
Post a well circulated gold piece, if you have one.

@OriginalDan.....I have panned gold in Grass Valley, CA.....and found some....but no coins.....It is a great area for gold panning. I had a friend who lived there... at the time he had a two quart jar full of nuggets...(back in the 70's)....said it was for his retirement.... Lost track of him...hope he enjoyed his retirement. Cheers, RickO
I have to wonder if the 78-CC was carried as a pocket piece. It is unusually nice for such a well circulated gold coin ,,, far fewer marks than would be expected and original surfaces.
You could be right. I know a few people who have found things, for example an old wallet containing a gold $20 or two, buried in a coffee can. I’m guessing this was found under those circumstances and not exposed raw to dirt/rocks. Gold is soft so I too would have expected more dings, the pocket piece theory makes sense.
Could be a pocket piece that fell out of the pocket in ideal soil conditions.
Nah, That was a card sharks lucky piece that he would loose and win back many times!
Maybe!
oops
Killer circulated gold, topstuf.

@OriginalDan. Love that 1878-CC double eagle. It has a great look and you can can still see the vertical die scratch on Liberty's neck near the hair, and on the reverse, the two small die lumps between TY in TWENTY.
Here is my most well circulated gold coin and it is in an OGH...
In case you are wondering, the 1858-O is graded VF30

Looks like somebody knows their 78-CC dies! I didn’t realize how well protected that die scratch on the neck was until I saw this coin.

@pocketpiececommems that certainly qualifies as well circulated gold. Do you know the story behind that one?
I don't but guessing someone with more money at the time than most people.

She's pretty scarce!
Even when well-worn, a gold coin gives a person a deep, primal, warm, fuzzy feeling. A feeling of significant satisfaction, if the gold coin is yours. Some nice coins in this thread.
The thing that bothers me about these low grade P-01 to AG-3 in TPG holders is that how many were worn from circulation or being carried as a pocket piece and how many were "manufactured" for the low ball registry set craze, especially with those coins being sold at a premium.
I used to think this way, then someone challenged me to manufacture a lowball coin. I took a silver coin that started around AG03 and attempted to take it down to P01. Realizing how difficult it was to wear it down naturally, period, and especially without it coming out looking polished, I would say that zero of the coins in this thread were “manufactured” to be lowball coins. Sure, gold is different than silver but it’s still very difficult to do what you’re claiming was done.
Probably around the late 1850s.

Makes one wonder why it matters how it got that way, whether worn down lowball or colorfully toned..
There's no "proof" that can convey with sale, only opinions of "plausibility." both toning and wear can and are convincingly faked by the skilled... every single day.
