California Fires, Again

I know that there are many collectors and dealers in the state.
Are there any disruptions, evacuations or losses that impact us numismatists so far? Is anyone threatened now and preparing? How can we who are not affected help those who are?
Losses were substantial in last years' fires and much good discussion followed. How can we minimize losses this year?

A new fire broke out this morning by the Getty Center in West LA. The only way to minimize loss is to evacuate if the authorities issue a mandatory evacuation. Here in Orange County there are no signs of a fire and fire crews are heading north to help LA County.
It's gunna get worse before it gets better.
Just the time of year in California.
My coins are safe for sure.
Best wishes for everyone.
Slabs seem like a good way to protect coins in the event of a fire. They can keep the coins findable and protect them from dirt while being able to be cracked out and placed into new slabs afterwards.
The Getty Fire is just a few miles away from our offices.
Although it's been getting under control, I can see the
smoke coming up over Mulhulland, the North boundary of the
fire. Been interesting watching the Water Planes and Hilocopters
fly in front of my view toward Mullhulland, and also watch them
in real time on TV.......
They're about to close the south-bound 405 Freeway (San Diego Freeway)
from the 101 (Ventura Freeway south to Sunset Blvd.
In addition to the large Kincaid fire in Sonoma County, yesterday there were numerous small fires that started in numerous parts of the S.F. Bay Area. Very high winds, low humidity and dry trees, bushes and grass combine to make a single spark a catalyst for a new fire.
Some areas have had no power for a couple of days. The atmosphere yesterday was filled with smoke.
High winds are predicted to show up again tomorrow.
When events disrupt our daily lives, we realize how fortunate we are to have power, water, shelter, food, transportation, communications, etc at our fingertips.
These disruptions do result in one changing his or her routine and mindset. Over the past two or three days I have seen people talking with each other more, even with strangers.
It sure would be nice if a winter storm from the Pacific rolled through California and drenched us.
My prayers go out to to the good people these fire have effected.
I know firsthand how devastating these fires are. With high winds sometimes people can not even get out alive. My advice is if the fires are within 30 miles from your home start gathering the items that are important to you and be ready to leave at a moments notice.
California is in big trouble. Everything is sooooo dry and typically we have high winds this time of yer, rain or no rain. I’ve never in my life seen the conditions so horrible for fires and I’ve lived here in California all my life and I’m going to be 68 in a couple of weeks.. Nothing but dry fuel on the ground with high winds. That is the recipe for disaster.
Be safe and prepared, Joe
Take care. Sounds horrible there.
Actually, California is a fantastic place to live and play
Really sorry for all those affected, but this is yet another reason why I choose to live elsewhere.

Stay safe everyone. Your life is the most important thing.
Umm...I was talking about the fires that are burning up people's houses and risking lives. If that's your idea of fantastic, then I just don't know what to say.
California actually has very mild minor incidents from natural disasters per our population compared to other states.
We have no Hurricanes nor Tornados and very little major flooding. Earthquakes are basically a non-event here. We also love our Great White Sharks
I hope you didn't just Jinx yourself about the earthquakes. Perhaps you should take a stroll back in history. All it takes is 1 big one to devastate many millions of people now.
Give the guy a break. He’s trying to be positive about California. There is plenty to be proud of.
While still showing respect for the people that are dealing with wildfire. And sharks.
Two givens of sweet Cali.
I'm considering moving to California (was just there this weekend). Even with the wildfires and taxes, it is a truly beautiful place.
Got a substantial mountain fire here in Tucson. Mt Lemmon is well populated so hope that everyone is safe.
Be safe. No worries here, nice little blizzard all day today.
Stay safe everyone, we are expecting a couple inches of snow tonight in Wisconsin.
Forcast for WED Lakeside (San Diego) where I live is 74 degrees, 21 miles sustained winds with 9% humidity
We will be on watch for sure as we live on the edge.
They've bumped up the wind forecasts for Wednesday and Thursday, it's supposed to be the strongest Santa Ana event this season. I live near the top of a hill at the west end of the San Pasqual Valley and the wind comes barreling down the valley. Can't wait until Friday...
BTW - still enjoying the ahi tuna you so generously gifted me last month. Thanks again!!!

Red Flag alert warning for Southern California
Some of my favorite memories are from when I lived in Lakeside. It was a great place to grow up.

My business is fire protection. I'm in Southern California. Sixth generation on the same ranch. The family original ranch house burned to the ground in 1965. I was there. Built in the 1890's. I know all about what's going on around here. Nothing new. California always burns in September and October. I'm in contact with L.A. County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura Co., Riverside County, San Diego County, Imperial County, fire officials every day . NEWS FLASH!!!!!! Nothing new. Same old same old......except.....too many people living in fire prone areas. Welcome to paradise! CALIFORNIA. Burns in September and October. Floods in December and January. Welcome to PARADISE.
P.S. It's only going to get worse. Too many people living in hazardous areas.
Be safe, wherever your at.
If that was directed at me I'm sorry. Hard not to see what can be if you studied Geology..
" Earthquakes are basically a non-event here."
Except when a major one happens in or near a heavily populated area about every 25 years or so. We're overdue for another one.
I lived in Wisconsin for a bit. It was unlivable three months of the year, but at least you knew when a tornado was coming.

I lived for many years in California... Mountain View in the north and L.A. and Agoura in the south. Some good memories....I was fortunate there were no major fires when I lived in Agoura, since we were out in the hills with scrub and fields all around - horse country (we had Arabians)....At that time the major concerns were rattlers and coyotes...Cheers, RickO
Are bank vaults generally fireproof?
It's hard to believe all the fires in California.
I mean we're all so cool.
Best wishes to all those affected by this and every season's fires.
I love California too, but won't say more, out of concern for appearing tone-deaf and having an irritatingly smug lack of self awareness 😉

CA. is a great place to live, but like every place it also has it's bad aspects. One aspect of CA. is that there are wildfires. These are "normal", and our vegetation is so evolved/adapted to it, that there are many species that can only reproduce IF there is a fire. On the whole, given that it's a drier area, So. Cal. has more fires than Northern Cal. In No. Cal. we are dealing more with power blackouts right now, although I can look out my window and see the brown haze caused by the wildfires in the North Bay.
Best of Luck to all those strongly affected by the fires!!!
Here's a good, moderately long read about fires, power etc. in CA., how we got here and how to "fix" it. It does include some politics, but it's not partisan. It's an issue that all Californians have to deal with.
