The Ultimate Rattler collection

I see note on Greatcollections of the collection coming up, any ideas on what it contains or where it came from? I am hoping for a real cool old stash......

I'm hoping for a few white rattlers with unusual type coin.
I'll be watching!

WOW! @ianrussell
Hmmmmm..... now that's a good start!
Very nice teaser!!
Well that’s pretty
You're probably happy it's not in a white rattler. :-)

@ianrussell When is this collection of old holders due to go live on your site? I'm anxiously awaiting the postings of the collection.
We're working on that at the moment. More news will be released about the collection in the next 1-2 weeks, and I anticipate all will be listed at that time as well.

It is really impressive on how you have built great collections with your team Ian. Not only a replacement for teletrade but a viable collector friendly Ha. Alternative. Lot of grinding but that a collection like that comes to you speaks volumes.

Will anybody be bidding on the coins in those old holders ?
Not a single person will be bidding on these. People stay away from the old holders like the plague.

All of my collection is in a safe deposit box!
I think if you mention that they are cursed, you might be able to knock a few bidders out of the running.
I am curious if most of the coins are dipped. During that era of of slabbing wasn't toning looked down upon by most collectors?
My GOD! That quarter!!
Thank you for the compliment. We have a great team who work long hours to make it all happen.

Wait until you see the dime, my personal favorite from the collection. But I don't have an image of that yet. Here's another coin, the lower-graded of the two 1797 Half Dollars:

I can see why you are using the word "Ultimate'. Wowzers.

@ianrussell has/will the collection be going to CAC?
@ianrussell can you tell us a bit about the collector and more about the collection (i.e how long off the market, the focus of the collection, etc). Thanks
What show will they be displayed at? Thanks

This is goona be good!
But I'm dying of antici
judging by the looks of the two posted already...the answer to the 'has' part of your question is most likely 'no.'
Yes, the collection will be reviewed by CAC and not a single coin has been sent in for regrade/reconsideration/crossover (there's fat NGC holders too). The only thing added to their original holders will be plenty of CAC stickers.

The coins have been off the market for 30-40 years, all U.S. coins. Includes type coins, some duplicates where the owner liked the coin etc.. I hesitate to say at this second when the collection stopped, since I'm not at the office to refer to my notes. More information will be included in the PR in the next 1-2 weeks.

Wow. Wow.

The combination of the old holders, coins not sent in for reconsideration, CAC, and off the market for 30-40 years---my gut tells me these coins will go for moon prices. This collector sounds like he did things the right way and either he or his family I am sure will do very well on the auction.
IMO, I wouldn’t CAC a group like that. The mental downside to a green sticker vs gold outweighs the upside
Wow. Just wow.

I chatted for awhile with the Great Collections folks at last summer's Long Beach Show. Super friendly guys...I could not have been more impressed. Love their site, and their customer service. Can't wait to see these rattlers. Get busy Ian!
Dave
I've been thinking about this....... TDN has a point. The gambler in all of us would be very excited by a bunch of rattlers that had never been tried. As a consignor, I'd be really tempted to not send them. It's the same reason they're still in rattlers, actually.
What about the ones that do not sticker! What will that do to the prices?
Since the vast majority will/have CAC'd, it's a no-brainer in my mind. That being said, I do have some consignors who wouldn't...those who don't want to wait a few extra days, those who don't appreciate the green sticker, etc.

@ianrussell, I think it's going to work out fine either way...... but was there any thought to sending them all in for regrade? Certainly many of them would..... but there's the allure of the rattler, the possibility that you're holding a diamond-in-the rough so to speak. If you apply the same logic, there's no reason to get them stickered.......
Personally, I think I'd have done exactly what you did, but as a consignor I'd strongly consider both options.
Either way, it's a heck of an interesting collection and one that will generate no small amount of attention.
Oh to have such problems.
I’m a HUGE proponent of CAC. But for an original rattler hoard there’s no way that I would unless the collector had a terrible eye. A nice group of rattlers speak for themselves and the assumption will be that every coin will go up. Slap a green sticker on that and it may actually depress the price.
I agree with Tradedollarnut. I buy Peace Dollars in rattlers and pay a premium for them. One with a green sticker tells me it won't upgrade and I bid accordingly.
I saw Ian at a coin show in Hawaii last year and though I wasn't a big name or whatnot, he was pleasant and friendly. Really down to earth nice guy. Since then I have been bidding on GC for world crowns and have won a few and hope to keep bidding and win some more.
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
I wasn't very appealed when Ian told me that the entire collection is/has been sent to CAC because if GC did not send a single coin from the collection to CAC, there would've been extremely strong prices for every coin. But now, what if something doesn't CAC? It'll probably sell for a fraction of what it would've if it wasn't ever sent to CAC. And same thing with green CAC's.
Personally I find old holders with stickers on them a bit unappealing, I like the holders to be clean, but I cannot deny the appeal of a gold CAC sticker!
Ya know, you can just peel them off.
Who has time to check everything on the CAC population page?
Please everybody get a hold of yourselves. It's just an old piece of plastic that doesn't hold the coin tight. You really don't care about the coin do you ?
Just got the email @ianrussell can we expect to see some NGC white and black label fatties as well?
Ian is providing significant transparency with his decision to send the collection to CAC. Would anyone jump for joy to pay a premium to get a coin and find out that it wasn't quite the 64 indicated on the label? Or had some PVC on it that wasn't apparent when it was graded but is now an issue? Or had another type of issue that was missed when PCGS graded it? After all, nobody is perfect. A fresh set of objective judges for these coins after decades off the market is invaluable. This is especially true for collectors who won't be able to see the coins in hand.
Another consideration. I have had a green stickered coin regrade higher and still sticker (the holder was beyond being cleaned up properly). In fact, it stickered at 2 grades higher. Others have had this experience too. This happens most often in rattlers. As a potential buyer, I applaud Ian for sending them in.
White label "fatty" holders - yes. But no black holders, unfortunately. There's one very special Morgan Dollar in a fatty holder.
