Friday. Hmmm. Something we were supposed to post today...

METAL PORN!

I enjoy the hunt probably as much as the kill now. Something has to be really cool for me to pull the trigger.

Walked into one of the local shops this week and they had a tray of generic silver rounds. Boring, right? They seem to be 1980s Silver Towne type pieces. Nice quality and not as common as they used to be, but not rare by any stretch.

A few were toned--again, not unheard of and nothing especially desirable or valuable.

But one or two had exceptional toning. That's a little more interesting.

But then the dealer pointed out a few that were badly damaged. Apparently, a contractor was using a modified skid loader to tear down an old single-wide way back in the woods. The loner tenant had passed away a few years back and the landlord just wanted the dilapidated trailer removed. The contractor had picked up part of a wall and was lifting it into his lift trailer when a "waterfall of silver coins poured out". Over 100 of these vintage rounds had been hidden inside the section of the wall. There was apparently some gold, too, but the contractor decided to keep that for himself.

So I picked the prettiest of the bunch. How do you pass up a $20 story like that? :)

    That is interesting....I live in an area where there are many old, old houses....and I have often wondered if there were hidden treasures in the walls or buried in the cellars. Cheers, RickO

    That's a cool story!

    When I was 11-12, we lived a year in Cambridge MA while my dad went to school. My parents rented a vintage house built in the 1600s (with subsequent additions), purportedly the headquarters of Washington while the American troops were there, and subsequently the headquarters of the occupying British. The owners were taking a world tour, and rented the place out for that one year. There were working harpsichords, books in the library autographed by Nathaniel Hawthorne, etc. My bedroom was in the attic in the old slave quarters. The place was a treasure of fascination for a kid my age.

    There were ghost and myths abundant about the old place. One of the stories was that a tunnel was to have been dug between that house and the Longfellow House across the street, and that it had been filled with Revere silver and then sealed off. I spend a lot of time nosing around the cellar hoping to find something to excavate. I did minimal damage and found nothing. But what a tale!


    Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

    Didnt make it to 10. Still have tomorrow though. Ive been trading off a lot of my collector coins into something a bit more liquid. Planning for the future type of stuff.

    Love those onzas, @Jinx86 ! One of my favorite to stack. There are a few varieties that make those kind of interesting. Lowest scale pan either points directly to the "U" in Una, or between the "U" and "N".

    @Kliao I think the ones to watch for are the serial numbers with no prefix or no serial # at all.. Check out www.allengelhard.com great info there!
