I've heard it used before but this is the first time I have seen it on a label.

Did they actually do that back then or is that just a label error? I don't remember seeing that as a grade before.

It's a typo or what the grading services call a "mechanical error." Looks like the seller is trying to profit from this labeling error. The certification number look up says it's an AU58FH.

How is he trying to profit from it, other than listing it for sale and accurately pointing out the labeling error?

since it's a numbering system (Sheldon) the the descriptor means little except to differentiate between normal and proof strikes.
    It's still a 58.

    That’s an interesting mechanical error!

The last one I saw PCGS ended up deleting the cert (one gets an error when looking it up). I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happened here now that the picture has been published.

    Only the second I've seen.

I sold a OGH MS58 1877-S Seated Quarter to another member here years ago.

Eventually I hope the TPGs just drop the "MS" charade entirely and just throw a number on the slab.

This thread is going to become part of a bar bet between 2 semi-drunk collectors:

Drunk guy #1: "Bro...I'm telling you! PCGS grades stuff MS 58!! I saw it on the CU forum!!!"

Drunk guy #2: "Dude...you are out of your mind! That's not even on the grading scale"

1: "How much you wanna bet"? (Pulls out phone....Scroll scroll scroll) :D

AU-58, Full Head is a legitimate grade. It was when I first became a dealer in the mid 1990s. I know it became official at about the same time as I got in the business. I can’t say if the green label holders were totally excluded. If there is a “Full Head” on an AU-58, quite possible and legitimate

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

How is it a labeling error make it thru all the graders , including the master grader at pcgs without being caught. Then to go to cac and make it thru them without discovery. Telling you guys these graders are human and make mistakes grading coins also.

I was told by the former owner that PCGS's use of MS58 was by request of SLQ specialist Jay Cline back in the day. I do not know if that is true, so I did not mention it in the description.

As for Perry Hall's comment, um, no.

Yes I agree with your point about the graders. Label didn't get printed till coin was graded. Brain took a nap. Still had to go thru I would guess at least two quality control people. My point was that we think of these grading companies as the one with final word but they turn out to be human after all

Well, I know many collectors focus on letters and numbers and even slabs.... and collectors are entitled to seek whatever excites them...for me, it is just the coin....I would likely not even notice such a mechanical error...Cheers, RickO

I gave you the credit as the seller. You were the smart one to buy it on ebay at 3 am. It was a fun purchase and sale for you and purchase by me backed up by a quality grsded coin so purists could not complain.

    I still have it,

But what is it that only quarters are getting graded MS-58? LOL.

A sensible grade as there is an awkward downward transition from low MS to high AU.

Perhaps someone collects labeling errors. I started a collection of labeling errors for 1855/54 overdates (6 coins) until I submitted my 1855/54 with proper labels and numbers and it came back a normal date. Now, I realize "mechanical errors" are common to PCGS attributed coins so they're not anything unusual or worthy of a premium.
