Can anyone tell me about the new PCGS "RARITIES" coin holders?

~~~~Hello everyone!
Can anyone give me any specifics about the new PCGS "Rarities" coin holders? I believe they were announced at the ANA show, but I have not seen anything on the PCGS website.
Thanks!
David
Great (sarcasm), another way to differentiate the "have" from the "have not"...if this "VIP thing" is true.
BST transactions: dbldie55, jayPem, 78saen, UltraHighRelief, nibanny, liefgold, FallGuy, lkeigwin, mbogoman, Sandman70gt, keets, joeykoins, ianrussell (@GC), EagleEye, ThePennyLady, GRANDAM, Ilikecolor, Gluggo, okiedude, Voyageur, LJenkins11, fastfreddie, ms70, pursuitofliberty, ZoidMeister,Coin Finder, GotTheBug, edwardjulio, Coinnmore, Nickpatton, Namvet69,...
I have not heard of these... is it a way of documenting provenance? Or some other reason... Cheers, RickO
My understanding is that the "VIP" holder is being introduced to house coins valued at over $100,000.00. Perhaps PCGS would be kind enough to provide further information in this thread, as I have not seen any announcment or information as of yet on their website.
Basically today's version of the Regency holders. About 3.5" x 4.5" rectangular (more or less) with room for more stuff (e.g., the name of your Important Collection™) on the label. They are the new default holder for the top submission tier.
count me out for obvious reasons and mark me as thinking it's a bad idea that will die on vine, quickly I hope.
I'd like to see a pic of this new slab.
I assume our hosts will be putting up a picture and official announcement this week as they get back to the office from the ANA show.
Are you talking about the holders that the Liberty Nickel collection on display at ANA were in, which I don't like?
Ahhh.... pander to elitism. So smart.
Then there will be another thing to mention when criticizing the grade of a coin in one or just being snarky.
This is a bad idea. (even though I've not seen it)
How divisive do we want to make this hobby?
Here is the 1913
Very nice looking holder. I bet that 1896-O Micro O Morgan that was shown in another thread would look good in the Rarities slab.
Well, at least it doesn't detract from the coin.
Sorry we haven't been faster to get out press. Will be info out soon but to make a few corrections. It's called the Rarities holder, it's not the default option on any service tiers, and it's not exclusively for expensive coins. Details to follow, thanks
Might have to request this on a sub just in case they do become like the regency holders
Do they come with a little bag too?
Collector, occasional seller
Will PCGS also provide 20 slab holders for this size?
My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:
This is what I thought with the "First Struck" designation. Somehow a lot of people had imbibed on the 'kool-aid'.
I was wondering what California did with all the leftover plastic from banning straws.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
The case housing the 1913 nickel appears to have numerous small defects in its surface. Perhaps that is just dust photographed on the surface, rather then imperfections in the plastic itself.
Could PCGS please clairify and thanks!
Obviously, it appears to dwarf the nickel, but the overall look of the holder reminds me of the early attempts by PCGS 9 (or NGC) to certify "problem" coins. Does anyone else see the resemblance?
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
The coin was in a glass case, so this is just an image taken with my phone from the "outside" the case.
Do you pay extra for all that plastic?
Thank you for the clairification!
It would be helpful if PCGS would issue an official defination of what a "Rarities" case is, and the specific criteria a coin must meet in order to qualify to be placed in one.
Thanks in advance!
No, it is all built into the grading fees
In my opinion, the case would be much more attractive if the insert around the coin were clear.
Indeed, with a bit of extra clear material around the coin as well, so that the coin appears to "float" in space rather then having plastic arms holding it.
upon seeing it the holder and insert look nice, it's the idea that strikes me wrong. I am a minimalist, I feel that in the end less is more.
I think my favorite lookers are copper proofs in NGC fattys with white inserts.
I'm not a big fan of the way the 1913 nickel looks...... "Oh look, there's a coin in there!" Hopefully, if true, the new thing won't be anything like that.
I agree with @keets on this. Less is more, and anything that distracts from the coin is a negative. Slabs are already bad enough, but we're used to it and my brain more or less removes the slab when looking at the coin. With that 1913, it's pretty tough to do that.
Well that leaves me out
I was under the impression that the new rarities holders would look somewhat like old Regency holders and would be different from the Forsythe holders pictured.
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Way too big. Also, now thieves will have an easy way to spot the big ticket items if they are doing a quick smash and grab job.
Excellent point!
Funny, I was thinking the exact opposite.
Wow - ugly.....
I would like to see this new slab next to a normal size and a 5 oz size slab.
Hello all, the official press release will be live tomorrow but I wanted to take a moment to answer some questions and reiterate a bit of what @BrettPCGS said.
The Rarities Holder is an optional holder for coins submitted at the rarities service level, which is the highest tier. Any coin submitted for top-tier grading or reholder will have the option of being encapsulated in this holder. If the Rarities Holder is not requested, the coins will receive a standard PCGS holder. There is no additional fee for the Rarities Holder.
PCGS worked closely with Gerald R. Forsythe to design this holder for his collection. We decided to add it as a permanent addition to our product offerings, for free, to give collectors a way to differentiate their higher value coins.
Thank you all for the feedback you have provided.
@HeatherBoyd while I’m not a fan of this particular holder, I LOVE the fact that PCGS is trying new ideas and changing accepted practices.
That’s how PCGS will take market share and how the hobby/industry will grow/improve.
I eagerly await the next new thing!
Yeah, they look like the old NCS holders (if I remember correctly) and NGC details holders, lol.
My one question on this is what will happen when a new “finest known” coin come to light? How will PCGS correct that discrepancy?
In the case of 1913 Liberty nickels, I don’t see a potential discrepancy. Are you aware of another coin labeled as “finest known” with such status being subject to revision?
Getting ready for a future of slabbing iPads, maybe?
I feel that the holder totally overwhelms the coin. I'm not a fan.
Heather and Brett:
PLEASE give those of us using the new holder the OPTION to have the center insert either clear (so the coin appears to float in space), or just keep the center insert CURRENTLY in use by PCGS.
I love having my rarity-level coins in the larger case, but don't like the new "milky" white center insert with crude plastic-looking arms holding the coin!
Many thanks, and congratulations on the new rarity-level holder!
David
Will PCGS provide new storage boxes that can accommodate these oversized slabs?
I don't think people who store their coins in a safe deposit box where space is very limited will want to use these oversized slabs.
Well, now they need to make larger "stickers".
Nah, classic video games!
A lot of interpretation with the word rare.
As I’ve said before, I believe that storage space constraints and the bulk of slabs has caused many of us to collect fewer (and more expensive) coins. So as someone who would like to see more coins in every collection, this new mega-slab seems like a step in exactly the wrong direction.
I've actually been thinking it would be nice to have smaller slabs, for denominations up to a half dollar.
Supporting old silver dollars, American Silver Eagles and Pan Pac slugs makes the slabs much larger than necessary for denominations half dollar and smaller.
Though I'm not sure how many people would like breaking up holder size for dollar and above vs. smaller than a dollar.
It's nice that the width fits "GERALD R. FORSYTHE COLLECTIONS" almost perfectly.
It's interesting that it has an "S" on the end for "COLLECTIONS". I'm wondering if each collection maps to a coin type?
