Do you have any background on this piece? I have seen plenty of love tokens and engraved coins, but this is fairly ornate with the train design.
Not for me, but kind of neat.
All I know is what I found on Google. C.P. Mitchell was the owner of the Savannah and Charleston Railroad, which went bankrupt in 1873.

Cool piece, @MrEureka .
You may have seen this already in your searching, but just in case: https://books.google.com/books?id=_twhAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA509&lpg=PA509&dq=c.p.+mitchell+++savannah+and+charleston+railroad&source=bl&ots=XdtGlkZ910&sig=ACfU3U0-KImdbiOVJID597f2dJq6rZYmdw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj764755Y3kAhUNpFkKHen-CQQQ6AEwC3oECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=c.p. mitchell + savannah and charleston railroad&f=false
Very nice. They call “stupid” things living.
I kinda wish the design was on the back so I can see the year....

Fantastic! Love how they left the date!
I like it a lot. I think I would've bought that unless the price was way up there!
Edit to add...so did ya pay more than a Grand?
Really cool piece!
Yes, of course. That was the “stupid” part! 🤣

Somebody loved someone .....
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
I was going to say "Shazam!" like Gomer Pyle used to say, but I understand that Marvel owns "Shazam" now!
;-)
Stupidly super cool!
Bankrupt except for one dollar.

That's really cool. It's got the railroad collectability thing going for it too.
Hey, what else can you do with some money if you can't have fun with it ?
Right near the top of the “cool” scale
Pretty cool engraved piece.
That is great... and on a Trade Dollar... big silver, representative of the big locomotive. Cheers, RickO
Maybe! Maybe Not! I would wager no matter what you paid for it someone out there is willing to pay more!
We once sold an obscenely carved buffalo nickel for an obscene price because we knew the right buyer for it.
That is really cool!!!

Hits my happy feels on many different levels.
So this is like a logic puzzle, we now know that Andy is crazier than Realone, so they can't be the same person. Lol.

They might have been quoted different prices and/or Andy might have paid less than Realone was quoted.

That's neat, perhaps it was a "reminder" from a friend or even himself of what he had (a railway.)
this is an awesome coin.

More Than It's Chopped Up To Be
That is really neat, especially with the historical connection to the railroad owner.
I love this piece. ANy chance you could do a better photo now that the ANA is over?
That is one large engraving. True art and looks very dimensional with the detail work. Fantastic historic connection.
Weird it was done the same year he bankrupted.
Super cool! @lordmarcovan will like that one!

That piece is exquisite! I would never call it stupid, paying up for something so interesting and unique.
As the saying goes, "find another!"
Congrats. We want a high quality photo of this baby

"Coin collecting for outcasts..."
That, sir, is an understatement.
Andy, great piece, did a little more research for you... my take on this is that it actually has a lot of cool history behind it.... first of all the railroad C&S RR was just one of those railroads that was off on timing... I have one in my town that was built by JP Morgan and also went bankrupt... but thats a different story... the C&S RR did not get support because neither city wanted the other to prosper, they both competed against each other... meanwhile it played a huge part in the Civil War eventually the tracks being mostly destroyed by Gen. Sherman...
C.P. Mitchell and this is important part was made President ( I dont believe he owned it) and he was also the Receiver so I think this occurred after the line went bankrupt...Since there was a payment due in Jan of 1873 public posting in the local newspaper of the time... I think this is when they defaulted.. using common sense here since we see no other public postings after that time period... I would guess that this pieces was given to Mitchell as a good luck, kind of pocket piece presentation piece to him when he took the job... I would say its worth contacting the Railroad collectors who really know history of these old railroads and research them or the local historian down that way ( I used to be the associate village historian for my town) if you want me to try and dig up a good name for you down there to contact let me know... I think its a great piece and dont know what you paid for it but not a stupid purchase at all...
The 1873 Trade Dollars were not released until well into the year. Without looking it up I think it was July.
Good thought
I like that. Cool art work as weii
