Do you have any background on this piece? I have seen plenty of love tokens and engraved coins, but this is fairly ornate with the train design.

Andy, great piece, did a little more research for you... my take on this is that it actually has a lot of cool history behind it.... first of all the railroad C&S RR was just one of those railroads that was off on timing... I have one in my town that was built by JP Morgan and also went bankrupt... but thats a different story... the C&S RR did not get support because neither city wanted the other to prosper, they both competed against each other... meanwhile it played a huge part in the Civil War eventually the tracks being mostly destroyed by Gen. Sherman...
C.P. Mitchell and this is important part was made President ( I dont believe he owned it) and he was also the Receiver so I think this occurred after the line went bankrupt...Since there was a payment due in Jan of 1873 public posting in the local newspaper of the time... I think this is when they defaulted.. using common sense here since we see no other public postings after that time period... I would guess that this pieces was given to Mitchell as a good luck, kind of pocket piece presentation piece to him when he took the job... I would say its worth contacting the Railroad collectors who really know history of these old railroads and research them or the local historian down that way ( I used to be the associate village historian for my town) if you want me to try and dig up a good name for you down there to contact let me know... I think its a great piece and dont know what you paid for it but not a stupid purchase at all...

The 1873 Trade Dollars were not released until well into the year. Without looking it up I think it was July.
