Are you a Myopic collector or do you multi-task??

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm a multi-tasker, always looking at different things even though I tend to focus on one at a time. Right now I'm focused on some stuff in a Stack's auction but I have formulated a Plan B to fall back on if what I think will happen does happen --- I get pitched a shut-out!!

So depending on how you look at it, I'm a multi-tasker who tends to be myopic --- or I'm myopic with the ability to multi-task. What about you??

I try to have several collecting objectives or even types of collections going at the same time. I collect things that are "scarce on the ground" as they say, so I get bored when I focus on few narrow areas of interest. At the same time, when presented with an opportunity I focus carefully before making a purchase decision, as in an auction. That too is part of the pleasure of collecting. Is this what you're getting at?

    yes.

I have avoided buying a few coins I've located because I wanted to wait for Stack's to show their ANA catalogue. now that I can view it I sort of think I'll get nothing, so I can wait till that auction is over an attempt to buy the other coins.

I use to multi-collect but now I'm only interested in my interests.

    I'm a coin juggler.
    Always have a plan B, C and D.
(Because plan A usually doesn't work out.)

Some have accused me of lacking focus because I collect so many different series. Over the past month I have continued to expand my knowledge about Roman coins and the history of the 12 caesars, worked on a set of Civil War era Indian Cents, written articles and assembled Power Point presentations on the Comitia Americana medal series, added a Mary and Philip shilling to my British kings collection and purchased some 20th century political buttons. In the mean time I post responses to most any question about U.S. coins that collectors pose on another site. It all keeps me busy and far from bored.

I could never collect just one series in depth because collecting die varieties and most especially die states gets boring and frustrating. When I got involved in die variety collecting I found that I would hit a wall and could go no further. So my hands are in lots of things, and that’s what makes me happy.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I like to be focused on one or two things. I find that having too many irons in the fire can get expensive. I am much more disciplined in my spending if I focus on completing 1 or 2 projects at a time. I tend to make irresponsible purchases if I’m trying to acquire too much at one time resulting in bad examples of a coin, duplication, etc.

My issue is more about moving between hobbies..... I tend to do this frequently....so while I may be (and usually I am) looking for a specific coin, I can easily get distracted by a new holster or firearm, or a deck of old cards, or a Guinea marble ....So I multi-task between hobbies, not coins...Cheers, RickO

I'm focused on two things but slow going.

When I go to a coin show or a coin shop, I look a lot like Marty Feldman.

I can't look at one thing without seeing 5 others that I need to look at. I'm hopeless!

I feel this way sometimes, my box of 20 is now 7 boxes strong and rapidly gaining weight.
And that's just the most active piece of the collection.

    Hopeless.

I have a few areas of interest : US, Canada, some Latin America and Scandavia, all pre 20th Century. I'm able to keep myself under control with this approach.

Come on over to Chicago, Al. You can multi task all you want here.

You can also vote early and vote often.

    What a deal!

I've been firm in my thinking that no one can truly "multi-task". That's why I have a list of things to do. And that's why only one thing at a time gets checked off.

Joe, you should come and work for my boss!!! :p

Saturday was the day before one of his monthly shows and he always gets stressed out with the preparation and stuff tends to roll downhill, he won't get up from his desk unless he has to!! shortly after we opened I was waiting on one guy at the bullion counter, a second was going to his car to retrieve a potential "pawn item" and a third was needing help because my co-worker couldn't ID some jewelry --- and then I answered a phone call, somebody needed to know what we were paying for AGE's and I had to double check with my boss.

that stuff is sort of routine and as it was going on my boss was telling me some things he needed packed up for the show. at the end of the day he asked if I had put those four bags of Wheat Cents in the car: I hadn't but remembered him asking. now, maybe that isn't multi-tasking but I often feel like I need to be an ambidextrous super-spider monkey with a prehensile tail, two hands just aren't enough!! >:)

With respect to the above post Al, I can relate. And I know we call it "multi-tasking" and still.... it ends up being one thing at a time with a lot of "iron in the fire", so to speak.

I got the ADD so I got hyper focus and then crappy focus. And distractibility.
Other than that, I can be a myopic. When I am risk taking.
Like when I am buying platinum and Palladium.

Being new to the hobby I'm all over the place. I haven't yet settled into one particular type or just buying graded coins. Still in the fascination mode of making coins however, the place I started with Lincolns is winning.
