GRADE POSTED - For me, a significant NewP. Early US gold. GTG.

In my quest to do a US type set, a few key decisions had to be dealt with up front. Half dimse? Each sub-type of Seated? Early gold? Early copper? Small eagle quarter & half dollar? Major designs or minor varieties?
I basically settled on a business-strike, major design type set, knowing full well that a few of the holes would forever be empty. No big deal. Still, early US gold simply can't be ignored and many of these are among our most beautiful coins.
For me, the grand-daddy of them all has always been the relatively enormous (in diameter) early eagle. I know that it's actually one of the easier early gold pieces to acquire, but its visual presence commands attention. The small eagle design is preferable, but will probably be forever outside of my budget. Heraldic will have to do.
While filling up the war chest, I've been oogling these for several years in dealer's cases and watching them at auction. I've discussed them with several dealers including Doug Winter. Very early on, it was obvious that most of these have had help at some point during their 200+ year existence. Those stripped of their surfaces didn't do much for me and believe me, I was offered plenty!
Eventually, this one decided to come live with me. It's been a while since I've enjoyed acquiring a coin so much.

Awesome pick! Au 53 is my thought
Beautiful coin.
I would say mid to high AU based on the pics.
I really like the look of this coin. You did a good job picking it. One of these years I hope to pick one of these up too.
Substantial coin, Bryce.
Great coin!

Very nice "Conehead"!
Dream coin, for sure.
XF or AU...great pick up...I admire your patience...it certainly paid off!!
Great coin! I've been working on a type set myself and am still constantly going back and forth on what pieces I'll need to feel that it is complete.
I'm using the Dansco 7070 as a spring board to start the type set (have 35 pieces left here still so it will be a while) but do you have a list of the coins that you'll be adding to your type set that I could view?
Thanks much!
I'll guess 55. Very cool piece of history.

Great Addition. Wish you did ORIF at my local hospital... would love to see that one in person!
I was going to guess XF-40, but it seems from other respondents I'm being too tough. Whatever the coin is graded, it's a heck of a coin and congrats on your NEWP.
I like it a lot and would be proud to have it in my type set. AU50-53 would be my guess based on the pics.

I think most have been too low.
Well.. based on the pictures and @MFeld 's grading guide, I would judge the OP coin to be 55 or 58....Cheers, RickO
I'm sticking with 58 or higher.
AU55...great piece.
Based on the prior graded coins as MFeld pointed out, I would revise my guess to 55.
I'm guessing 55 too. It's a beautiful coin! I'd like to acquire one some day!
So here’s the tally of the guesses:
XF45 - 4 votes
AU50 - 5
AU53 - 3
AU55 - 11
AU58 - 2
I got this coin in the last Heritage Long Beach auction. It’s in a rattler holder and knowing that it has been there for 20+ years is a plus. It does not have a CAC sticker, but I’d assume that it was tried.
It’s in an AU50 holder. I had @MFeld look at the lot for me. He said, “looks like a nice 53, shot 55 - I like it a lot - unusual for a coin of this type.” Coming from this particularly helpful and knowledgeable former professional grader and guest CAC grader, that’s all I needed to hear.
I'm not gold expert, but I see the reverse as an easy 55 and the obverse as somewhere between 53 and 55.
Mighty tall 50. Cool.
Never had the chance to gradeflate. Pore thing.
