1889-CC and 1893-CC Morgans - Real or Fake?

Hi folks,

I'm just looking for opinions on whether these are genuine (I am aware they clearly have surface issues - cleaning, rim dings, etc). I am just concerned about authenticity. The mintmarks look a bit weird to me personally but I am not certain:

If in doubt, PASS. The time to be taking chances on raw CC Morgans has long since passed. I'm no expert on these and can't offer an authenticity opinion.

Rather than give you the answers, got to the www.vamworld.com/ web site, then click on

I will go out on a limb and say "genuine," but both have edge issues that will or probably preclude a straight grade from PCGS or NGC. The 1889-CC has a filed rim rim at 12:30 k on the obverse. The 1893-CC might get flagged for a crease at the 9 K on the revere. Both have not been graded for a reason, and it's not in your favor.

They look like well worn genuine coins that have served their purpose in commerce. Maybe somewhere out west, Vegas maybe?

The sharpness grade is VF, there are other issues.

Something awfully familiar about these two. Doesn't matter, I wouldn't buy either of them.

93-CC is VAM 2A. 89-CC seems like VAM 5, but the condition of the rims would have me looking really close at the edges on this one. Both are problem coins.

    Both look genuine to me.

They may have spent some time in those one dollar Las Vegas slot machines. ;)

Both look good to me, both have been cleaned at some point, jmo.
I would slab em, at least they'll have genuine on the insert, increases liquidity.

These two CC Morgans are authentic. Both have faults as described above. If you are just filling holes, then ok, but if you are building a set for registry or future value, I would wait for better coins. Cheers, RickO

They look real to me but they have issues. If you plan on selling them you’ll do better getting them authenticated.

Not for me. Assuming their genuine, there’s an excellent chance both have already gone to a TPG and failed to pass muster.

I question why are they not slabbed?
