Nice coin! That is an understatement. '36 satin proof extremely tough to find in high grades that are nice, period. With color is a feat...

Esoteric question. I’ve noticed from this discussion and my endless perusing of eBay that there are far more toned wheat backs compared to memorials. Is there a reason for this? You all seem to post 99% wheats here. Is there a difference in the materials that cause it, or is it just get that most memorial cents aren’t old enough to have developed the tones? I do notice it’s really hard to find memorial cents in BN which I assumed is due to younger age.

Maybe I just spend more time looking at wheats so I’m just not running across memorials as often?

@SiriusBlack I think the Wheats have had more time to tone and probably get more attention as well. But yes they also have different material compositions. The Wheat cents (with 1943 exception) are copper alloy (95% copper) while the Memorial cents are copper-plated zinc. Interesting question!

Memorial cents were also copper from 1959 until 1982.

Interesting. Maybe popularity skews the results. Older wheats are more valuable/popular and more likely to get slabbed?

Yes, and because there are less pre-1934 wheats to begin with, finding choice examples that are naturally toned is challenging.

Ty. I sold most of my original brown set to a dealer friend of mine back in 2007. It had a pretty nice 24-D in PCGS 65BN. He still has the collection in his personal stash. I have offered to buy the set back several times. I put the set on pause, buying only a few per year until 2014, when the pops finally climbed high enough that I thought there was a reasonable chance I could rebuild the set even better than before despite the fact that many top browns were tied up in his collection. I can honestly say that my rebuild exceeds the quality of my original effort. One stubborn hold bout has been the 24-D. I believe I was the under bidder on the last one at heritage. I had to pass on the one I saw a few years before that one for lack of funds.

I will likely be laying low for the next several months. Buying the 21-S and 24-D in quick succession took the steam out of the reserves. At least I got the long awaited 24-D. As a pop 19, it will be available with “some” regularity., but now I don’t have to wonder when the next one will be for sale or auction.... and even then, hope that it would be a nice example.
