Came across this coin. Looks terrific. Interested in hearing comments about the rim and how much that impacts this coin.

I'm not sure that is a hit.....could have come from the mint that way.

If you mean the rim area at 05:30-06:00... that looks as if it may have come from the mint that way...If you have the coin in hand, please show a better picture of the area...Cheers, RickO

That is weird. I looked at the cert. too. Is that a mint error, or, post mint damage? Almost looks as if pressure was exerted on the obverse rim where you indicate a rim hit, and another dollars impression was left on the rim of reverse, on the opposite side, same general area. Interesting. I'm thinking mint error...neat!

The hit may have been inside a mint bag that was dropped and would be PMD.

The denticals appear true form; with the exception of where the "S," and maybe the "T" are superimposed on reverse rim. If you magnify the reverse up to highest level, you can see the letters "FO SETATS" that appear to go under the denticals. Dramatic collar clash of sorts?
Maybe @FredWeinberg or @ErrorsOnCoins could please offer info?

The impression on the rim “STATES OF” is backwards. So cannot be a double strike.
The coin looks rather nice in other aspects to have such dramatic PMD but I suppose it’s probably what it is. If it was a die issue there would not be damage on the obverse rim.

I am just surprised PMD can be so clear, and the pressure can be so significant to generate the letters.

Not to rehash this thread. How can there be enough force to generate a perfect imprint on the rim from another coin without damaging the denticles?

In my professional opinion there is absolutely no question that this coin was damaged AFTER it left the coin press by being somehow pressed against another struck coin. The damage to the obverse rim shows were some force was applied to this coin to press it against the other coin. I do not know whether this occurred in the Mint, such as perhaps by two coins getting jammed in a counting machine, or by the bag the coin was in getting dropped or perhaps struck forcefully either inside or outside the Mint, or perhaps any one of 101 other things that would cause one coin to indent another, but there is no doubt in my mind that it occurred AFTER the coin was struck, and is therefore, by definition, POST MINT DAMAGE.
