Speaking of AT...
For some reason I was compelled to buy this... Strike is pretty good.
Don't worry, it wasn't very expensive.
Have at it.

Yes the strike is very good.
Very... blue?
What a dumb @ss move blatantly ATing a beautiful coin like that. I wonder how it would look after a dip?
That gives me a stomach ache. What a shame. Yeah, the strike is pretty darn good.

That Peace dollar has a great strike... ruined by the AT, between the AT and then the dipping to remove it, likely no luster will remain. Cheers, RickO
I'll be trying MS70 on it first to see what comes off. Hopefully that's all that it needs since MS70 does not impair luster. I'm guessing the thick AT is hiding something that I'll find, but hopeful that it was the result of improper storage instead.
I don't have it yet and I'm out of town this weekend so better pictures will have to wait until Sunday or Monday.

Most ALL of my Peace $$ are blast white. And with that said, I too would have bought this coin. Might be AT, but I would not rule out the toning is NT. Probably not intentional AT, but it has been exposed to an environment that is nonexistant in PCGS holders. I would not rule out PCGS straight grading it........just look at most of the toned ASE's they have graded. And if it is AT, it was a job well done.
OINK
I will be sure to get better pictures before I do anything. It does have some similarity to another 1921 that I have that's toned with a granular look...

Its unfortunately 100% AT. Anytime you see that "electric" blue with purple/orange, you can bet it is AT. Those are three of the hallmark colors of artificially toned coins.
fugly toning, nice strike
Dip doesn’t destroy luster. Loss of metal and microscopic flow lines does. The loss of metal is caused by corrosion. The dip just uncovers what is left (and leaves susceptible bare metal surfaces).
That said, if I owned this coin it would be dipped immediately. The AT crud often continues to react over time.
Surfaces about as expected.

Any luster left at all? If so, I’d dip that thing. If not, we’ll......... maybe I’d still dip it.
Not really any cartwheel, just looks glossy-ish.

Definitely a nice strike. Not sure what's under the toning.
I'm with @BryceM on this one. I'd dip it and then place it in an album and hope for the best. If you're concerned, you could always use a swab and do a small test area.
I would. If PCGS straight grades this coin, it is time to throw in the towel and give up on third party grading all together. The coin isn't merely questionable to me, it looks to be blatant AT. Those colors and especially in those shades are huge red flags.
If all else fails, you could always carry it as a pocket piece and hope that it gradually looks more natural over time.
At this point I’d leave it be.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
OK so I tried MS70 first and there was no change in appearance. The q-tip was completely clean after application which indicates to me that this coin was recently processed. There is almost always some gunk that comes off.
After that I used diluted e-z-est, but the coin went splotchy due to the varying thickness of the tone. At this point I could see the light hairlines that the AT job was meant to hide. I decided to go ahead and just dip it full strength to get rid of the rest of the AT.
I'm pretty sure this was a heat tone job, usually MS70 will get anything off a coin that in't part of it.
Overall the coin isn't terrible, but it will need to re-tone naturally to be appreciated.
I'm going to put it on my fridge next to a fake silver bar magnet which has toned nicely there.

Can we get a picture after the dips?
Not much to look at, but here are quick pictures.

She looks much better now. I think your assessment of toning to hide hairlines is correct. It's a decently clean coin, but unfortunately not worth much from a numismatic perspective. Too bad.
It looks much better now. It will look even better after it retones naturally over time.
This has been in a clip with a magnet on my kitchen fridge since July.
It is toning up in a not so offensive way and I think it is looking much better.
Pardon the cell phone pictures.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop on your experiment. Your dip in July seemed to be going in the right direction, but three months later the toning has changed pretty dramatically, and not for the better. You were able to remove the weird AT toning, but then the coin degraded very rapidly. Without any specific advice from some of the coin doctors that frequent this forum, I would just turn this coin into an experiment and try something else........you really have nothing to lose.

Hmmmmm, the sense I get is that before the dip and AT, the coin had been harshly-cleaned.
The AT work seems to have penetrated into the deepest pores of the coin and dipping didn't take everything that was attached to the metal completely out.
Not good, what a shame.
I knew it would happen.
Could be the case, at least it isn't bright purple and blue.

Put it out of its misery already, 😉
I don't think it's that bad looking.

It looks much better, and would appeal to a broader audience of buyers.
