rotated coin in holder...how could this happen?

I recently sent in a token to our host in an NGC slab for crossover. When it was returned (DNC) the coin, still in the original holder and with no visible signs of being removed, was rotated about 15 deg counter clockwise .it was the type of insert that makes contact around the entire edge of the coin. I am not crying foul play at all , I just do not see how this could happen.....and I do find it annoying . maybe somebody with insight to the process can shed some light on the matter. Thanks ,Chris

Coins sometimes rotate in their holders. It's not because someone did something wrong. Jostling during handling can cause it.

The good news is if it rotated once it can rotate again. To fix things some collectors repeatedly rap the slab corner on a hard surface. Ultrasonic vibration sometimes works (e.g., with a Sonicare toothbrush). I've shown a youtube video a few times.

My coins rotate in the safe deposit box. Luckily, I haven't noticed any sign of wear!

DNC .....(did not cross).....it was returned in the same holder with the same grade it was sent in . That’s why I thought it was odd that it rotated, they never removed the coin from the original holder.

I was quite surprised as well, but the bank is on a major street, and it must be vibration from the traffic?

The vibration method (with a toothbrush) works well as stated above.... Tapping it on a hard surface will also work, but takes longer....Cheers, RickO

I've got newly slabbed coins back from PCGS that were rotated just from handling in the mail. Or I should say, I hope is was from handling in the mail and not sloppy "slabbing at PCGS". Anyway, it doesn't happen a lot and it's usually easy to tap it back in place.

I think it was the mail......I fixed a couple of my coins and I was surprised how easy the coin moved while I was fixing mine.

    Thanks all , Chris

I used the toothbrush method just once. It was so fun I decided if I could get it to do a 360...... nope it got stuck at 180. But, that's okay because when I sent it back for reholder it came back as a rotated die....
