Commem collectors— where are all the Pan Pac halves?

I used to be able to go on the eBay and find plenty of examples of problem free mint state panama pacific commemorative halves from MS63-66. Lately, there’s a small handful of details net graded coins but almost no higher quality halves. Are these halves being hoarded?

It's the market. Commems are in the tank. I've been looking for a Pan Pacific for years. Just the right one. There were plenty out there but the prices were just too high. I kept waiting for a price decline. I knew it would happen but what I didn't figure in was that with the lower prices, nobody wants to sell at a loss. Stupid me. I don't even care anymore. I'm in sell mode now. Getting old. Bottom line......I just don't care. Never thought it would come to this but it has.

The Pan-PAC Half Dollar is not a common coin in nice, no problem attractive condition. It was not easy to find a nice one when the prices were higher, and sure not going to get easier when they are down. That is the problem with lower prices. You think, “Oh boy! Now I can buy one of these for less money!” The trouble is the supply dries up because the people with nice ones won’t sell at the lower prices. You might get them a year or two from now but not now.

When I was a dealer, I had a darkly grey toned piece in NGC MS-63 that had a scratch. It was consistent with the grade, but I figured it would not sell easily. With my normal mark-up, it was gone after a couple of shows.

I’ve had the one in my collection, a PCGS MS-64, for almost two decades. I bought it from JJ Teaparty years ago for strong wholesale money when I was a dealer. In one sense I am buried in it, but I have seen pieces in MS-67 holders that I did not like as well.

Mine is a 63; they tend to pick up nice color from the little boxes they were sold in. I guess I'm a "hoarder of 1," LOL.

Wow! If you're only going to own one, yours is the way to go.

Too many are just lifeless and dark in color. Finding a nice example is very tough.

Interesting and unfortunate turn of events. Perhaps adding it to a dealer want list can help surface one?

I just paid up for a pop 11 So-Called Dollar I added it to a dealer want list. At 11 graded specimens, it was uncertain when I’d find one but one showed up at pop 3/2 on my want list so I snatched it up even though I paid a premium compared to what I think I’d get it for at auction. I’m happier to have it and possibly need an upgrade than to have a hole in my collection.

Good idea. Have you been able to pick up anything via a BST want ad?

    Time for a regrade?

Not really. Both of the coins that were posted subsequently are better than the piece I have. The point is there are Pan-PAC half dollars out there, some in high grade holders, that are not very attractive.
