State internet tax vent

I knew it was going to catch up to me sooner or later but I have to vent a little. I live in New York and won an auction last night on eBay for $385. I was very happy to win the card at this price because it was well under book value. I was not happy to see the $31 applied to the invoice for state tax. What a bummer. I am going to miss the days of buying a high priced card and only worrying about shipping costs. I don't think the internet tax has caught up to every state yet but in New York it has.

Good ol' taxes. "Yes, we will sell you this card, but we'll have to break your thumbs first".

Same here....picked up two football wrappers for $158 and saw the final total was $175. I thought there was a mistake at first, then I remembered. 😟

Yea, and we all know the new tax revenue will go to good use. Such as lining the pockets of politicians in some way, and that of their family and friends.

They constantly conjure up new ways of taxing our hard earned money to feed their insatiable appetite for greed.

However high they tax us, it's never high enough to satisfy them.

As mentioned in another thread (somewhat tongue in cheek), I can also see eBay accidentally overcharging on tax a little because the tax code is so new and confusing. And don’t expect a refund.

And when you complain to your state, they’ll form an exploratory committee and charge you for it in taxes.

Well it may be the devil and it may be the Lord but you’re gonna have to serve somebody!

Steve you are so right on this.
Not only are our taxes the 2nd highest n the union. Fees are astronomical.

Just a few days ago the Albany Times Union had a story about the spending (I should say it is legal here in NY)

eBay should update their site to show the sales tax when you are bidding on an item and will be charged sales Tax. They might do it upon checkout, but it needs to be upfront before you actually make a bid. Maybe on the screen where you are submitting your bid, they could show the total amount plus Sales Tax...

That shouldn’t be too hard once you are logged in and about to bid.

Fortunately, I think the internet sales tax is going to have a positive impact on card shows... I don't know where in NY you live, but if it's near NYC, there are about a dozen shows close to you each year... Want to get that $385 card for $385? Buy it at a card show.

I'm in upstate NY. But even so, I doubt I would have been able to pay the price I paid at a card show. It sold for 115 under book value. I sat in the comfort of my home and sniped the auction. I didn't have to travel, haggle or pay an admission. I'm not trying to knock card shows, but I probably would have paid more for the card there and still had to pay tax on it.

Don't be so sure... Dealers who set up at card shows are there to SELL, and the ones who do it for a living understand the value of doing a cash deal... I don't think there are any big shows in Upstate NY, but I find deals even at the smaller shows, because a lot of the people who set up at those shows are collectors looking to sell all or part of their collections... And they generally understand that taking a bit below market value as a dealer at a show is better than selling for around 40% off to a full-time dealer...

Of course, your other option is to have your eBay purchases sent to a friend or relative in a tax-free state.

I can’t believe there are 20+ posts in this thread. A huge corporation is doing what they’re legally required to, so as not to risk everything. How is that noteworthy? I work for a news outlet and we never report “Local Citizen Obeys Laws.” It’s only reported when an individual or company tries to circumvent said laws.

Because if you don’t, then you have no right to even comment. I’ve lived here my whole life, (with a couple small breaks here and there), and it’s a beautiful place geographically. It’s crooked politicians and people with ignorance such as yours that have ruined it cost of living wise. I refuse to leave. Unless you live here and see the scams that go on, then you trolling behind a keyboard means nothing to me.

Oh, please... Most states in America are like that, so don't pretend that high taxes and crooked politicians are unique to New York... I'm not going to waste my time responding to your rant because my post was simply in response to your implication that 'Taxation is theft'... That statement alone is simplistic and juvenile.

As simplistic as it may be, it’s a statement many agree with. Which states are more expensive then New York and California? I don’t know that “most states” measure up in that respect.

Admittedly I haven’t done the research and math, but I grew up in Rhode Island. Politicians there have been crooks for at least 40 years (maybe less so today), people complain about high taxes and the infrastructure blows. Take it for what it’s worth. I don’t know enough to say if it’s as bad as NY but I can say first hand it’s much worse than northern New England (ME, VT, NH) where I live now.

The problem is, you didn't say taxes are too high, you said 'Taxation is theft'... The first is a statement many agree with... the second is narrow-minded and naive.

New Jersey is in the same boat Dan. I travel there 3 times a week with work and it seems similar to what you mentioned. I enjoy my time there, but don’t live there so I have no idea as to what people pay out in certain instances. Love the Vermont/New Hampshire area and hope you are enjoying it there..

For NY and CA residents, the taxes are borderline theft. The lack of accountability is what a lot of taxpayers are tired of. The local govt suckered the voters to pass a tax for homeless programs and homelessness went up 16%. I fully expect you will hear about a massive outbreak in LA this summer, not sure which disease.

They tried to sneak a $500 million property tax increase recently to support the incompetent and corrupt LA School District and it failed miserably. Hopefully the taxpayers will start waking up.

There are a lot of NY collectors out there. I have to believe this will reduce the amounts they will bid or pay for items on ebay. I already had one ebay buyer ask for a discount to cover the sales tax. I’ve been thinking about downsizing my collection and this maybe the trigger I need to get serious about it.

All this talk of taxes makes me thankful.

I have enough money to last me the rest of my life!

Provided I go by next Thursday.

I am a Canadian that uses a Niagara Falls, NY address to receive my online goodies.

Shipping to Canada is a PITA, expensive and 13% taxation that Canada Post randomly collects for the Canadian Gov't.

I then, every 4-6 weeks, make the 3 hour round trip to pick up my haul. I pay $80/year plus $1/package for my deliveries. I am a BIG fan of making multiple purchases from the same seller.

So glad to see the other day 2 withdrawals from my chequing (checking in Canadian) account for Paypal followed by 2 smaller Paypal withdrawals for I am assuming NY state sales tax. So I have to pay NYS sales tax and I am "supposed" to pay Canadian HST of 13% when I come back across unless I stay overnight. About half the time the friendly Canada Customs person lets me through without paying.

I love my wife even more now that she is my graded card "Mule" ala Clint Eastwood....I have to declare some stuff though, because who goes to Niagara Falls, NY from Canada other than to shop? The Falls State Park IS REALLY NICE, but the next nicest/newest thing is the Wal-Mart/Sam's Club complex.....

Taxation is kind of ruining something I enjoy tremendously. I will have to change my strategy I guess and see what the deal is in Michigan....

This type of taxation is theft.

Always escalating higher taxes have become death by a thousand cuts to the middle class. This internet tax is now another financial wound to the finances of middle class families.

Lots of good folks out there, especially the disabled, shut-ins, elderly, etc, and others who buy necessities online, are going to be noticeably harmed by this.

Sadly, the top priority of most state governments today isn't about helping their citizens succeed, but how much money they can fleece from them.
