The "Disagree" option.

Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

The forum administrators have removed the "Disagree" option. It is their forum, their rules, and 100% their choice. This poll is in no way critical of their decision to remove that option from their forum. One member has pointed out a "period" where the "disagree" button was. His guess it is available but presently off-line. We can whine, entreat, or cajole the administrators to bring it back but I refuse to believe it was removed without due consideration. We are to blame because often when some member disagreed he received a disagree back. That is not the way this option was to work. Anyway, just for fun, how do you feel about the old disagree option?

I never used it, that I remember. I do feel it would have worked best with a mandatory explanation. Even the LOL reaction can be controversial if taken the wrong way. For example:https://youtu.be/IWINtUCshxY

The disagree button was like bringing up politics at a family gathering, throwing gas on a fire, rubbing salt in a wound, and adding insult to injury all wrapped up in one. I am glad to see it gone. It served little purpose other than to incite aggravation. Too many posters took it personally.

It makes me respond to some post with yet another to post to just say I disagree with someones comment rather than just clicking a button. It's often (but not always) enough to just say I disagree by clicking a button without trying to justify it and getting into an argument.

I think part of the problem is that most posts have several ideas, or statements, or opinions. And a single "disagree" would just create confusion about WHAT was "disagreeable".

Better off with people having to state their issue. If they don't care enough to type a few words, what they were disagreeing with probably wasn't important to begin with!

It served little of your purpose, perhaps. Are you able to look past that experience and see whether it was a gain for others at the same time that some were discomfited?? How much long-term intellectual gain as a trade-off for short-term stress?
Neither can I. Just to be considered. Like the proposition that "pain is inevitable but suffering is optional".

It served no useful purpose and caused dissention and even bullying. Many used it as retaliation, b/c there was no defense against it. If you disagree with me, then be a man and tell me why. Don't add a black mark to my record with no explanation and giving me no say in the matter...…just to make me look bad. That is a cheap shot where I come from.

Like most things "Internet"... it was abused until it got taken away.

Personally, I never used it. If I disagreed with someone I posted a comment... using words, arranged in coherent sentences, to convey my point. The disagree button was simply a way to avoid rational thought... just IMHO...

to my way of thinking it makes little sense to not have a "disagree" option while there is an "agree" option.

Could it be that the nature of "agreeing" doesn't take any explanation whereas one may disagree on many levels?

    The 'dot' between action is part of the design of the forum providers (in the html: it's just a 'bullet'), not an indicator of missing features, just FYI. (-;

EDIT removed reference to 'Promote' and 'Log' links that obviously everyone else cannot see - my bad!

Your emoji didn't emote. Mine would have been :#

If someone else hadn't gotten there first, I would happily use "There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't" as my sig-line. I have many geekoid tendencies including using a early portion of the Fibonacci sequence backwards as part of certain passwords.

Having had twenty-five coders working for me (long ago, like 360/195's in 1979 long ago), I know what I would have done to add or eliminate click features. Outside of the indication on each post indicating a "click", the program adds 1 to the click pseudo-statistic counter in clicker's profile. What did I miss mechanically? Are we table-driven or not?

However, not knowing your architecture (flow-charts), that statement loses some value. That data seems so extraneous to anything else that that I'm hopefully not irrationally exuberant in predicting your group has the chops to do anything that management wants in that area.

Not an IT issue, but outside of total posts, I think the profile pseudo-stats are irrelevant. So what? Add more targets within each post's area, reduce font and we can click our certitudes and ambivalences on a scale of 1 to 10.

I fail to muster much enthusiasm for vanity items like badges and awards, likes, disagrees and whatever. but that doesn't mean I can't get a kick out of some who do.

I'm really here to kick a little ass with people who are misinforming others. A horrible attitude which will make me the same number of friends as @insider2, a technically oriented gadfly to numismatic ignorance incarnate.
    He's blushing :#

I always felt the disagree button was a cop-out at best and a trolling tool at worst. If I post an opinion and try to back it up with facts/reasoning, somebody hitting the disagree button adds absolutely nothing to the discussion. Are my facts incorrect? Do you feel that I’m drawing the wrong conclusion from those facts? Am I missing some facts that might lead me to a different conclusion? It also depends on who is disagreeing. If it’s from an expert who has demonstrated his/her credibility, please tell me why so I can learn something. If it’s from a new member, use the opportunity to help build your credibility on the site.

IMO, the only people that benefitted from the disagree button are members that wanted to stir up trouble

The disagree button was a time efficient, polite button telling a poster to stuff it.

Would rather see that than the quotes accompanied by some petty insidious rebuttal.

not necessarily. besides, what good is it if all I can do is say what a swell guy you are and how smart and clever you are with the click of a button?? shouldn't I also be able to say I sort of think you missed the mark or you're full of crap by clicking another button?? that's really what it comes down to, people want to be complimented but handle criticism.

the entire "get rid of the disagree button" came about because of a few members, one in particular who I can't remember, that abused it. it was useful. the problem isn't the button itself, it is the abuse of it.

IMO, It had its place, although I don't recall using it very often. So I don't really miss it. I just pop in now and then to read what everyone is up to, and to see a cool coin or two, so if I happen to read something I disagree with, so be it... :)
