@tradedollarnut Can you tell us more about this acquisition (i.e. when, how long had you been wanting it, etc)?

It just happened to fall into my lap via Laura after another collector passed due to price

If you don't mind us asking, what was the price? It looks better than the Pogue coin which fetched $235,000.

I've often thought someone should start producing ultra high quality very limited Prints of beautiful Coins. Sort of like a Collection of Ansel Adams Prints.

Certainly this wonderful Specimen would need to be in such a Collection.

This could be the start of elevating the Numismatic World to a much higher Level of Appreciation.

    In excess of $300k

In multiple instances, the Pogue coins ruined the market for truly great specimens. For instance, I paid more for my ms64+ 1795 $1 than either of his non CAC gems realized.

Any chance you could post a video of tilting the coin in the light for us to enjoy here? :)

I have never seen the coin in hand. I rely upon Laura in many instances to pre-screen coins. This one has a long history of being amazing and he who hesitates is lost...

I've seen this coin in-hand and it doesn't suck at all B)

I think @MFeld and I are in tune with each other on the tone of the never-ending self-congratulatory hyperbole of the owner's partner.

I've never priced a banner ad on this website, but our hosts might up their balance sheet by charging her by the word for what has been, up until now, free advertising promoting the glory (and value) of her unique and special brand.

OTOH, I've seen this coin in-hand and it really really doesn't suck at all. Congrats <3

Which grade do you think is most accurate? It is now PCGS MS66+ CAC. It was previously in an older NGC MS67 holder (but post no-line "fatty" era).

I was there at the 1990 Stack sale as were others here. The coin did bring $52,250. Yet if you compare it to a lot of the other bust, seated, and barber type coins, MOST of those in attendance did not realize that was a once in a lifetime kind of coin.... unless it was bought by a consortium of dealers and the price kept down. CJ would know that.

I see a number of "common" superb gem stars obverse seated dimes bringing $15K-$20K each in this sale. Most of those aren't worth $15K today. Yet this 1796 10c has advanced 6X in price. So clearly, a LOT of failures to recognize the significance of this dime and some other sleepers in the Jan 1990 JAS sale. There was a lot of stupid money running around at that time....and chasing stupid CDN and Blue Sheet values. Maybe that was the problem....too many low pop coins as the TPG system was still too young. The 1832 dime in gem brought $27,500....seems like a lot in comparison. And fwiw my ex-1867-s quarter was worth $45K-$50K in Jan 1990 - very similar to the 1796 10c. Yet the dime has tripled the price of the quarter.

It's one thing to recognize the significance of this coin today. Who recognized the great value at $52K back in 1990? Who passed on it besides me? Well, I only had about $25K to spend at that sale....just a little fish.

Great post. Love the commentary of the times.

Wonder what were the main drivers in the change?

It's been close to 30 years since I've seen it in-hand. I remember the impact, not the finer technical points. It's not as nice as the MS68, but the toning is back-lit by virgin frost and silky lustre and is more intense.

I have to read comments from someone who has never actually bought and sold (on their own) coins that would qualify as "once in alife time".

The 1796 IS by far a once in a life time coin. Not even the 67's or 68 looks like it. Once in a life time means you will never see anything similar. Not how long someone owns it. I'd LOVE to buy ALL the 1796 10C that look exactly like this coin. My experience knows of NONE. I've only been a dealer for 40 years. I've only bought and sold the FINEST EVER coins for 20+ years. I KNOW what does and does NOT exist.

Then I certainly qualify to stand in for them. But @cardinal has already supplied an exquisite and subtle encomium for this coin that is likely more articulate than the person who writes your tweets (or I) can produce. Maybe (don't bet) I can dig up my old Eliasberg '95 $10 and make $25K helping you upgrade for @tradedollarnut

In fairness, @MsJohnson, I've got to say that, while the deftness of your exposition would not make the English Department at Highland Park High School very happy, you're damn near right. ;)

I've known Steve for 40 years. I'll probably have to work for less, but It'll be an excellent year for Petrus. :D
He also placed the coolest coin I've (w/Jay Miller) ever owned, the Spellman-Akers 1838 $10 (PCGS PR65 in 1989, $2.5M via private treaty in 2007 long after it left our hands). It would grade 66CAM today. The guy who sold the (inferior) Pittman coin a year or two later might be able to get that one back for me. :#

    1) I can get it for you for less
    2) Your partner seems to prefer it. It's likely not the worst POS, sticker or not.
    3) You're buying gold? LOL, you're eventually not going to settle for less and @OJ will likely troll you (and the rest of the planet) for a looooong time.

It's very special. Thank you for a second look. :)
I told you a long long time ago that if you really want to know about a coin, you're better off having owned the 3rd, 4th and 7th best. And a few others. This is a start :p

While it's been 30 years, my recollection is that my old Norman Stack Type Set '95 $10 (then MS64, and better struck) also kicks its ass, but then it never sucks that bad if it's a Legend coin. :p

We all, once again, congratulate you not only on your exquisite taste, but your financial acumen. In some ways, @Rookie, you have gained much wisdom. :oo:)

Rationalization is an exquisite form of denial. o:)

edited to add: Having looked more closely at a 40 year old image of a quite briefly-held coin I handled 30 years, I now think there's a good chance his coin is the Norman Stack piece. Ironically, the light distortion (thru the slab?) near stars 1-7 and RTY that mimics haze threw me off. If this is Norman's old piece, I'd be thrilled. Better (cleaner) than Eliasberg's for sure. IIRC, I don't remember "haze" on his either. :*

Confirmed (with thanks to Vicken Yegparian of Stacks) as the coin from the Norman Stack Type Set.
So my 30-years-ago memory is ego-driven. Ownership is worth "---" at its best. Oh, the humanity.
    A laughably embarrassing irony.
Adding a cool provenance for a dyed-in-the-wool coin weenie is part of my mission statement.
    Mazel tov :D

Having owned the Eliasberg '95 $10 at the same time, the former is prettier, while the Stack piece, though not graded as high by PCGS, is technically finer.
