Seated Half from the 7070, an old mistake?

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 12,188 ✭✭✭✭✭

I acquired this coin for my set at the Michigan State show around 1990-91. I loved the color, (which has deepened over the years), even though it wasn’t in really in vogue back then like it is now.
This was pre-internet and the TPGs were still fairly new. I didn’t know anything about AT, and hair lines didn’t bother me, assuming I could even detect them with my cheap plastic magnifiers.
The dealer had it marked as cleaned and it was fairly priced with little premium for toning, and gave me a decent trade in allowance for the half I was upgrading.
I don’t know if it’s AT or not; some of the toning has deepened and intensified from decades in the Dansco. I do know the surfaces are PL, but covered in moderate hair lines, which of course is death for a coin in this day and age:

Sounds like a great 7070 coin to me. Live and learn.

    Not a bad looking coin.

Are you really concerned about a mistake you might have made 29 years ago? Really? I certainly hope you’ve learned a little more about coins since then! Cut yourself a little slack.

Two other random thoughts....... First. I don’t usually need a loupe to see hairlines, just good light. Purely curious here - do you?

Second, as has been said, for an album coin, it’s perfect.

I agree that it is a nice looking coin and color looks nice. A lot of these older coins had been improperly cleaned and just treated different. Coin collection has become more informed and mostly improved due to grading services.

Am I REALLY concerned? No - just sharing some 'educational experience' with the forum here. And yes, I have learned a little more since then LOL.

Lighting at shows can be hit and miss, but yes heavy hairlines I can see with my glasses or my large, cheap 3x mag that I use for quick scanning cases - I like my 5X Eschenbach for close up work, when making a more serious purchase decision.

I really like the color and, as long as you're okay with the hairlines, it's a great album coin. It has extraordinary detail. I've seen 63s with hairlines so it might straight grade.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Albums are great places for 'problem' coins that you otherwise like--due to toning or whatever. There is room for all, and some of the so-called problem coins are quite pleasant to have around.

Though it is not a coin I would select (due only to tarnish - and I would not buy it and dip it)... It is a nice album coin and - especially for many collectors now - the color would command a premium. Cheers, RickO

I think that it is a decent looking coin. The hairlines are not showing in the photo, but if they are there, it would probably never get a straight grade from the major services. Like the others have said, it's a good album coin.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Would look good in my 7070. Love the colors AT or not.

Do you see that little bulls eye thingy just south of the "S"?
If you do see it just doesn't matter because I like the coin...……………….
