    Yep, the starting price was based on the color. Whether the color is worth >$8,900, I can’t say.

    Yes, my bad. An O mint dollar the looked like that would come closer to the current bid.

    I don't know what the coin is actually worth (the price is unrealistic to me also) but IMO the coin was a 64 (CAC agrees?) when it was graded in that old holder. Gradflation has occurred = 65. Today, due to its color bump it will probably 66 bean in spite of the cheek if it is sent for grading. We'll know in 7 hours if someone agrees

    Some of the reserves on GC auctions have gotten crazy. I hope Ian charges them a hefty premium for clogging up his auctions with those reserves. There's a Mexican platinum set that's been up for auction every week for like 2 months. CLEARLY, the reserve (starting bid) is too high.

    @ianrussell Yes, I hope this form of pricing goes away soon. If it is truly worth that kind of money (which I doubt) then the bidding will get it there. Starting so dang high is a bad business model....soon to be like ebay with to the moon pricing that never sells the coin.

    In my opinion this coin is too dark for that kind of money. I am guessing the owner set the starting price not GC

    Without commenting on the starting price, I don’t think the coin is anywhere close to too dark for most Morgan toning enthusiasts.

    Wow way out there.

    It’ appears to be an attractive toner with a strong shot at a higher grade.

    Perhaps his high opening is for bragging? I can see this guy taking gal out to dinner he met off some site (get to know meeting) and showing her his phone “As a matter of fact one of my certified rare coins is up for auction.”

    She says thinking (omg he must be rich) “wow that is fantastic, do you have more like that? Fascinating.”

    CDN 65 bid $100, 66 is $170. Of course toner a wild card that can drive up bidding higher. Perhaps a billionaire may want it.

    Unfortunately, Great Collections seems to have a fair number of coins with set prices (not really an auction then is it?). This is more the Ebay Format; start really, really high, never adjust your price and never sell the coin.

    Great toning but drop a '0' and divide by 2. If those 2 lines on the obverse are on the coin and not the holder I'm not even sure its a 65.

    Looks like an MS-65 from the images provided. Attractively toned, but not quite a monster in my humble opinion. Price bump for the rattler, bigger bump for the gold sticker, but not a fan of what's going on at 2 o'clock.
    Put this coin in a modern MS-65 holder with no bean, I doubt it comes close to the price it will eventually realize........
    The opening bid is unrealistic.

    The moral of this story is send them to GC without contacting first and ask whatever you want. I had a coin i wanted to send to GC. I sent an email and a very decent picture to discuss consignment and was told they couldn't start at my starting price. Sold it to NEN and they got more than my price I told GC I wanted before the little " new" sign was removed from the NEN website. NEN doesn't negotiate "new" coins only later when they underline the price.

    I think you're making too many assumptions. GC might hate this price also and would have refused it if it were the only coin in the consignment. It might be one of 100 coins consigned.

    I do find GC to be less and less fun for shopping. It's become more like Stack's than Heritage. Too many coins with ridiculous reserves.

    Now, I don't care what someone wants for a coin. Tons of worse on eBay, for sure. But for auctions, I like to look at everything in certain categories. So, for example, I look at all 1500 world coins. But when I'm scrolling past the same overpriced items every week, it is a little annoying as it increases my time without adding any value to that time.
