I agree. I am 1.8K behind, which for me constitutes a lot of time and clicking. Anyone want to give us the Readers Digest summary version?
Summary - Multi Billionaire trying to become the next Eliasberg(sp).
I wish I had that problem
I will have to power scan 1,800 posts one of these days when I have time. It'll probably be 2,500 posts when I get around to it
1.4 k messages and counting. I guess I must have opened it at some point, but I can’t remember doing it.
I just noted that I am up to 4.5k on the “Dan Carr’s latest.” I never opened that one.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
...haters gonna hate...let me guess, Michael Jordan can’t play baseball right? It makes me pull even harder for this Hansen fella to “Win It All” every time a poster talks about how his collection sucks; especially when it comes from forum OG’s...Keep it up and he will just reach his goal that much faster!

for those who say they have no interest---my question is how as a coin collector does it not interest you that a fellow collector is attempting to have a collection of every date and every series of regular US coinage? Maybe it is not important to you but to have zero interest in the coins themselves, the attempt to find the coins, what is available , what isnt, etc seems to me to be very odd. It's like a golf fan saying he has zero interest in watching Tiger win the Masters.
I enjoy reading it and I’m up to date. Currin has done a terrific job. It’s entertaining listening to Laura and the pictures are great. What’s there not to like about it?
Seriously! Did I tell you I was new at this? I'm not about to read 1,000's of post's about people who wish they had that collection and pretend to hate it BUT, I have looked at some of the coins and it is awe inspiring. If it isn't to you you might be in the wrong hobby...

I'm not in the wrong hobby. Coins are fine. Billionaire's buying them is not that exciting to me.

I am very far behind. He has hundreds of millions and buys expensive coins. I am not sure why that is at all interesting.
Hanson is in one world; I am in another world. I have hundreds of reference books, the Heritage site and Coin Facts which all offer a wealth of information. I take it that Hanson is buying the best grades possible and everything in the Red Book. I buy mostly AUs and lower level Mint State pieces and have to be more selective.
Hanson has his resources; I have mine. I don't resent what he's doing; I simply can't relate to it. In many cases, aside from a general interest, the huge collectors are on another level from those of us who are below them. There exceptions, like the gentlemen who formed "the Missouri cabinet," the greatest half cent collection fo all time. He could relate to everyone in the Early American Coppers club.
I have nothing against Hanson. I even have one of his cast-off coins with his name on the slab, and I am happy to have it. It's just that I don't feel like wading through hundreds of posts. I tend not open strings that have thousands of responses because I feel like anything I will have to contribute will simply be lost in the shuffle.

Fair enough. When I first joined here last year a member graciously welcomed me and said "Welcome to the nut house" and at that moment I knew I would fit right in. But honestly, between all other social sites and news sites this place actually contains the most sane & educated people I have ever encountered (in the digital world). So, maybe it isn't envy at all, to be put off by someone with unlimited resources. After all it is the thrill of the hunt that drives me and especially with my very limited resources.
Anyway, back to my point about reading on and on and on. I have a hard enough time just trying to keep up with @Hemispherical talk about long winded I will typically read the first few sentences then skim through and then read the last paragraph only to find it interesting which then forces me to read the whole damn thing again. Thank You Hemi!!!
I just learned about the 1817/4 Capped Bust Half variety discovered by Los Angeles dealer Edward T. Wallis in 1930 and acquired by Eliasberg in 1953 as the last coin of his set. Hansen doesn't own it yet, but it doesn't matter to me because I just enjoyed learning about the coin and variety.
I didn't know anything about this coin or variety before and it was great to look it up, including the text from the original October 1930 article in The Numismatist.
Maybe it is not important to you but to have zero interest in the coins themselves, the attempt to find the coins, what is available , what isnt, etc seems to me to be very odd.
perhaps what doesn't interest fellow collectors is that to Mr. Hansen most of the above doesn't really exist. if I understand correctly, he isn't actually looking for the coins himself and anything/everything is available to him. there is a large number of people who are fascinated by such things, the lives and activities of the wealthy, which is why the "Boob Tube" has entire shows dedicated to such things and there are many, many publications and websites devoted to such gossip.
such things fascinate and entertain a lot of people but there are others, such as myself, who don't really care or can't relate to what Mr. Hansen is doing. to be honest, if the original thread had never surfaced I would never have known it was happening. cameonut2011 above raises a good point about opinionated self-promoters.

The first item in the list is "the coins themselves" which is what I'm fascinated by and it seems Hansen is at least interested in enjoying the coins from comments of how he looks at and comments on coins, and shows off his coins with other collectors, e.g. photos where he's holding his 1804 Dollar with Bruce.
I think it's great just to see so many great coins in all different series.
I think this whole thread is a bit odd. This is a coin forum. People have zero interest in a thread about a coin collection that covers many different series, interesting topics (check out the last few posts on the Hansen Thread about the 1817/4 Bust Half Dollar), etc. ? If that thread has zero interest for you, as someone else said coins may not be for you.
I would add that there are some topics on the boards that don't interest me but I would never single one out to say that.
While we collect coins in different universes of rarity, I find myself rooting for Hansen. He has the best dealer representation in the world finding him the best coins.

I’m at 1.3k. I love what he’s doing, but I don’t see the point of following each new addition.
So I just visited the Hansen watch and noticed I left off on page 1.

I don’t dislike Hanson; I am just not interested.
Me too. GOT is gettin' good!
Later, Paul.
OK....what is "GOT"??

Game Of Thrones! You shoud watch it considering you lived in those times! LOL
Later, Paul.
OMG!! I have less than zero interest in GOT! What a waste....right up there with Lord of Rings thingy!
LOTR! 👍
ARGH! Didn't watch any of them.
Then how do you know you don't like them?! (asked by someone residing in Middle Earth...)

I could not agree more.
Exactly, How hard would it be to do if money was no object!
All of those type shows are stupid to me. Another one is Survivor!

It's not millions.....it's billions!

I imagine lots of folks enjoy playing golf but not watching others play golf.
I could be wrong though as I don’t see the point of either one.
That’s an interesting perspective. I wonder if those that aren’t interested in Hansen’s coins enjoy any thread about other people’s collecting?
I'm already falling behind on this thread.
Am a follower of the quest. Enjoy the photos and related commentary. Usually learn something new. Even if it is just one thing, that is worth it. Part of what collecting is all about
It would be more interesting if the discussion stayed on Hansen and various coins/issues rather than being overtaken by opinionated self promoters.
I am 1.8k behind and have no interest in what he's doing. to be honest, I opened it up out of curiosity and sort of regret doing that.
What's a Hansen?
Knowledge is the enemy of fear
