George Washington gave up his silverware to supply the silver that was used to make the 1792 half dismes.
However, he did supply Voight, through Jefferson, with enough silver "from his household stores of sterling" to produce the 1500 minted. The fullest range of this possibility transmogrified the story into specifically using Martha Washington's tea service, or somesuch foma

You need to read the newest research on the subject, "1792: Birth of a Nation's Coinage" by Pete Smith, Joel J. Orosz and Leonard Augsburger. The silver was supplied by Jefferson in the form of coinage (probably mostly Spanish Dollars) that he withdrew from the Bank of the United States (He deposited $75 of the $100 he withdrew. He wrote it down in his account book.) Jefferson took delivery of all 1,500 coins and started to distribute them on his summer hiatus from the capital in Philadelphia to Monticello.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I think that we have evidence now that the first Half Dismes were spent were on or about July 12, 1792, somewhere west of Philadelphia, near Baltimore. on the first day of Jefferson's journey back home. His notebook indicated tips in multiples of five cents rather than multiples of the Spanish Real (12.5 cents) as it had previous to this date.
Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.

You know, that joke is so old it farts dust. That speaks volumes of you and I that we have heard it. I didn't think anyone here would have known that. I guess there are a few of us here in the autumn of our lives.

"No, I don't have any.
Yeah, I'd like to buy those, too, but you can't find 'em anymore."
Not a "wive's tale", but a pet peeve: Coin show dealers with Canadian coins at Canadian trend prices but in US dollars.

"There was public outrage about the original Standing Liberty Quarter showing a bare breast."
Unless there is updated research to the contrary, I don't believe there has been any evidence of this.

Thanks, @BillJones. A teeny lit bit of ignorance bites the dust, a new urban legend is unborn.
When BillJones and the Colonel banter, I pay attention. Thank for posting.

Real collectors don’t buy slabs.
It didn't strike up well and thank Ghu for that, otherwise, we would look for FN instead of FH
