What do you think your collection would look like

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭

if you hadn't found these PCGS forums?

For myself, thinking about it very honestly, I think my collection would have stuck at simplicity. The state hood quarters, a few morgans, maybe a dansco type album or two (not actually the dansco albums though but probably the cheaper, worse, pop in ones), and the SAE bullion coins.

Not even sure I would have gone to the usmint.gov site.

I think my collection would have been very modern, and very simple (and a heck of a lot cheaper but nothing to be proud of by any means). I also think that, at least, 99% of the collection would have remained raw.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I would need to be in a universe without PCGS slabs or where things I collected were not slabbed by PCGS for me not to find the PCGS forums.

Change "not found" to "not joined", "not stayed", etc.....I guess my point isn't as simple as I thought it would be....more like "if the PCGS forums were not part of what you spent any time with".

I, personally, think I learned a lot from folks here and used what was here to learn even more. I could have, easily, not bothered coming here and still gotten PCGS slabs. Seeing/having a slab from a company doesn't mean someone will automatically care enough to come and use the forums, does it? Maybe for an individual it does, but my question has been more of "in the absence of....."

For me the question would be “what if the PCGS forums did not exist” or had very little traffic.

In that case, I’d probably buy a lot less.

Learned much here, but my collecting has always been independent of digital hand holding. For those that need the help, I can see the benefit.

All raw, mostly low grade around vf or xf and thinking people are CRAZY for spending thousands on one coin. It would contain copper and silver laying around in a box. Coming here made me appreciate higher quality.

My collection would be pretty much the same without the forum....I have been interested in the same type of coins for many years... I saw slabs at shows before I ever joined the forum (over twenty years now). I have raw and slabbed coins, and they are always coins that interested me...some albums, some in coin cabinets...I have learned a lot here on the forum, but have always had a coin library that I refer to for information. I have purchased a couple of coins that I learned about here...however, my choice was based on the attributes of the coin I selected at the time. Cheers, RickO

I True viewed everything because of CU.
Otherwise, they would probably be in their original holders.

I personally do not believe it has influenced my collecting goals or content at all.

There are quite a few pieces in my collection that probably wouldn’t be there if you guys hadn’t exposed me to how neat they are.

Precisely the same, but I like a venue to chat about coins!

I would be doing what I was doing before PCGS and these forum came along...finishing my Lincoln set in my Capitol Plastic holders..Plus I would have a lot more money by not having 2 sets; one in Capitol Plastic, and one in PCGS plastic. Not to mention the money I would have by not having to send coins in for grading, etc. But one thing will never change - my Capitol boards collection still look better than blue boxes...just saying.

I think that I'd be doing the same thing.

The Registries have influenced me more than the chat boards.....That's why I started collecting NGC/PCGS only.

Although, I think the boards have given me more knowledge, which I suppose has helped me to collect superior quality coins.

Joining here has definitely helped my quest to add nice coins to my collection. If it wasn't for the BST, I wouldn't have some of the coins I consider highlights in my collection today.

I would be less knowledgable with a much humbler collection.
<3 The CU library of informations is almost endless if you really wish to learn; this search friendly place has all the answers.

It would have a small effect, really nothing as far as what I collect as that choice has and will always be mine. I have benefitted some from knowledge that is passed down however I'm always mindful of the viewpoint from which the info comes. The biggest impact has been the ability to purchase some coin from other collectors via the BST, I wouldn't have had those opportunity's without these boards.

Likely it would be about the same as most everything I have in the collection was bought in person, but my enjoyment of the hobby would be a lot less without these forums, that's for sure!

Seeing what dealers and advanced collectors find appealing has helped know when to pay extra for the right coin and what to avoid. Otherwise this is a social outlet. I do like it here a lot.

The US forum has brought entertainment value to me over the years. If this one wasn't here (as the most interesting), I would have remained on other coin boards instead.

I don’t know if my collection would look too much different, but I sure would have missed out on a lot of learning opportunities.

I have learned some things here and met some great people, but I don't think that my collection would have changed very much.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

And, Bill, while I believe everyone means what they say, I honestly really believe your collection would likely be very similar to what it is. I think you have great knowledge and a great eye, even before PCGS came into the picture, much less the involvement and usage of these (great) forums.
