Profit wise...what would have been the best coin (s) to buy the year that you were born?

Only coins minted that year.
Assuming your parents let you get your grubby little hands on the gift money.

1956 Type 1 PF70 DCAM half dollar in an OGP proof set purchased in 1956 from the mint for $2,10.
1949-S Frankie half MS67+ FBL ... If they had had those then!
Kind regards,

Nothing. It is and will always be pocket change. 😥 Now if I was born 150-200 years ago I could select some decent coins.
1969 had just basic pocket change and a 40% half. Apparently though, for 1969, it would be a full-step Jefferson Nickel. Only one PCGS-graded 1969-D (last auctioned at SB $30,550 in 2016) and no graded 1969-S examples known.
Kruggerands probably.
1959 Vatican City 100 Lire Gold, John XXIII. Scarce and turned out to be a one year type, only official gold coin of that pontificate.
1967 Krugerrand?

DD cent. Guess the year.
Did they make a Krugerrand in 1976? If so, probably that.

Cool topic. For U.S. coins, sadly probably some top pop modern coin (unless mint errors count). Otherwise, probably the SP66 of this coin: https://www.pcgs.com/valueview/4eme-re-publique-1944-1959/1973-p20-fr-gad-868-essai/3455?sn=650259&h=pop. Mintage of 20, 12 of which were destroyed.
I'd pick a 1945 Saudi Arabia gold Disc; however it depends on the condition of the coin. I could probably buy a small bag of these discs if I picked a 1945-D 50c PCGS MS-70 with a CAC bean!
1966 would not leave much.
Guess cherry picking a full step Jefferson nickel?

A 1958 1C Doubled Die Obverse PCGS MS64 Red sold at SB Baltimore 3/18 for $336,000....that's a pretty nice return!!
Yes! And also one in MS-70 condition.
Rolls and rolls of Philly mint cents -
1948
"Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working" Pablo Picasso
For US it would be a 2003 gold eagle.
the 1960 franklins proof or unc.
Full-step Jefferson or Kennedy half business strikes (1966) that would be pop top today.

I think it would be a higher graded, double sided DCAM versus the one I own:

Anything that's gold dated 1954 !!!
None of them. I have lost money on almost every 1949 dated coin I have ever bought. That goes for both the assembled mint set I put together many years ago and a mint issued double mint set I bought just before they crashed.
1948 was mostly a numismatic vacuum so probably a 1893-S Morgan.
I think these were only a dollar, with little interest, when discovered.
I suppose this, if there was any way my parents could have found one!
.

Probably a high MS grade Washington quarter or a Franklin FBL

If U.S., a 1954 cent in blazing full red spot-free MS68 or better. I think at auction today, that would beat out anything with claims to full steps, full torch or fbls.
Or as Sagan would, say, "Of course, I could be wrong."
Good night.
1968-No/S Proof Roosevelt Dime. Would love to own one.
Later, Paul.
1946 Walking Liberty Half Dollar........an uncirculated roll........looking for the DDR reverse version. But I never knew there was a DDR version until this thread. About $3,500 in MS66.
OINK
