Graded coins

Started collecting on my 60th, when I quit smoking. Thought I'd try something new. I've managed a collection from Penny's to Morgans. I see all the time coins advertised pf69 or 70 only, let's say 3000. Rare coin. I have a lot of graded coins but as I look at them, I can lay them next to the rare ones and can't tell the difference. Am I missing something?

I am little confused, but I will try to interpret what you wrote.
When it comes to Morgan Dollars, aside from the strike characteristics of individual issues, the common date and mint mark combinations and the rarer date and mint mark combinations do look pretty much the same. The only difference is that some coins are harder find and more expensive than others.
As for modern Proof coins, about all you will see advertised are PR-69 and 70 coins because those are only pieces that should even be considered for certification. In fact, the PR-69 coins are usually the “mistakes” which didn’t make the PR-70 grade. They often sell for low prices.
You comment about “everything looking the same” is the reason I became a type collector. In a type set, every coin is different, and you can decide to ignore the minor differences in the designs if you choose.
Here is a link to my half cent through non-gold coin type set. Perhaps you will find it more interesting. My only warning is that very collectors are ever able to finish one of these sets because of the rarity and prices for some pieces, especially those in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Please provide pics of your comparisons of “graded coins” and “rare coin.”

What you might be missing is the difference between condition rarity and mintage rarity.
@Jekel.... Welcome aboard....Congratulations on quitting smoking.... and you have selected a great hobby.... I suggest though, that as all newcomers to coins, you will need to get some books... Start with the Redbook... then get type specific books on the coins that interest you... also the Cherry Pickers Guide (CPG) will help with errors ...Cheers, RickO
