What motivates you?

For me it is a mixture of:
Beauty
Rarity
History
all 3 then I feel I hit my own personal trifecta.
What about you'all?

Money?
No, Brains, beauty, and then her money.

Grandpa's collection. ( when they walk in the shop). And I get to see them first, because his kids and grandkids never cared enough about collecting to ever look.

OK, I see this is a serious question.
I'm motivated by curiosity.
I look forward to alone time with my collection and getting lost in my thoughts.
Thoughts of history.
Researching mintage numbers, varieties, wants, upcoming auctions & shows...
So much so, it motivates me.

For me it is the thrill of the hunt buying raw coins with grades being the "kill".
Beauty in Bullion. I choose them for their beauty and their weight.
Eye appeal first and foremost. History and rarity after that.

Good story (history is part of it.)
Good eye appeal for what is.*
Rarity
A price I can afford
The fact that others would like to own it is always a plus.
Assuming that the OP is referencing motivation towards coins/collecting and not something else.
You nailed it......these are my three, as well.
So as to contribute my own spin, may I also add the fact that I always like to finish what I started. I also like the recognition for my efforts and the value of these beauties. I have been fascinated with Walkers, since I was a kid, and it has been a lifelong ambition to complete a mint state set.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Understanding something
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
..... then I'll pay for history
Old gold that is crusty and attractive. I look at # of survivors in ALL grades more than mintage #'s. Metal disks are almost all worth a look.
Motivation factors depends on the hobby/interest
Eye appeal, history and price for coins
Eye appeal, workmanship, history and price for guns.
Eye appeal and high performance for cars.
Looks like the common denominator for me is eye appeal.
How about the "that's interesting" factor? Cool Die clashes, or a rare die state or marriage...

Money! Tons and tons of money! more money than can be imagined! Oh, and sex. Sex too.
Your first motivator can buy all of your second motivator that you can handle.
beauty
history
rarity
each one depends on what day its asked. jmo
Awesome color really motivates me.
I'd say history and beauty. I love circulated coins the most. When I look at a heavily circulated Mercury dime, for example, I try to imagine where it traveled over the last 75-100 years...whose hands it passed through along the way...what it purchased, etc.
It's absolutely mind boggling...

Dirt
I'm motivated by "the hunt". Right coin at the right price from an unexpected source.

Well, beside my "sig line", when a newly discovered error/variety coin is announced, the fact that they're out there, without too many collectors know about. Esp. dealers!
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

I am a bit surprised no one has said they are motivated to have the best (with whatever type of collection they are working on). Maybe it isn't PC but I am motivated to "try" and put together the best collection of whatever it is I am collecting (even if I don't get there). Going hand in hand with that is the "chase".
For me it is the hunt and the associated history of the series.
Then the deal, the grading, the flipping.
I've owned some cool VAM's and other varieties, but the value always forced me to sell.
Not a whole lot of regrets.

Hmmmm, to recap some of everybody elses motivations, beauty, rarity, history, eye appeal, money, sex, dirt, strike, sincerity, nice smile, no blemishes, the hunt, color, affordability, errors, the best, life, hobbies, wife, wine, sunrises, sunsets, curiosity, brains, beauty, her money, weight, thoughts, grandpa, fine linen, dealing, grading, flipping, researching, analyzing, that's interesting factor, price, workmanship, performance, sensory pleasure, the chase....for me I guess it would be to just enjoy life, do my best reaching goals I've set, and humor....yes, humor has to be high up on the list! There's way too much seriousness and stress everybody is carrying. One of my favorite answers here..... > @RYK said:

You're right. I should have said PCGS/CAC!
On a serious note:
eye appeal (toning, cameo, overall good presentation)
uniqueness or scarcity
originality
What was the question?
The thrill of the deal and negotiation.
I just want one of each different kind.
