Nice outcome. Not sure I would call this a nice outcome, but if he is looking to learn, he is learning the hard way!

The grading fees on all of the coins except the 66+ are more than the coins are worth graded. Looking at the Trueviews, the 57's had zero chance of FB. If Catscratchfever is happy, so be it!

I am guessing @CoinscratchFever used vouchers. I agree if he is happy then all is good.

If you are right, then it is even worse. The 8 vouchers cost $31.25 each, plus shipping/handling both ways.

It is a good outcome in the sense it could have been a lot worse on the 57s... And I will now have a more discerning eye for the MS67. You can't teach that (at least not to me) it must be learned.

I think a good general rule for FBL is if you have to wonder if it is, then it isn't. Unless it's a 53-S... then try it anyway

Wow! There's a nice bounty on that one. "The Hunt" continues.

That set was very likely not original, so considering that fact, you could have done much worse....

I think you did quite well.... 66 and a 66+ is good... sure, it cost a bit, however, as you said, you learned ... We have all paid tuition in one form or another. Cheers, RickO

Don't do it. If you need an outlet for the toned Franklins let me know!
beautiful coins! They'll be graded first, you good with that?
Works for me. Goes along great with some of the mint set toned I've purchased lately.
Half a point more and I would have been PMing you. Instead these will have to stay to help fill a set.

There are more than a few lessons to learn here:
- Mint Sets at this point typically have at least some of the original coins switched out. I'd guess something near 90% have non-original coins. Never pay full money!!!
- FBL are just that, full meaning all the way across on the bottom most line on the (3) top lines and (2) bottom lines. They don't have to be as strong and bold as on a proof Franklin but must be complete all the way across. Hit's on the lines by contact can easily result in a non FBL designation.
- With ever increasing prices by the TPG's, insurance and shipping costs included you have to be careful with what you send in. If you're made of money and want to pay for lessons, so be it. In today's market however, you'd better have a strategy.
- Dipping in acid is no guarantee that the toning comes off fast enough prior to affecting the luster. Once you get to that point you might as well just spend the coin. It's ruined for numismatic purposes. Only the very few coins that would benefit from a dip should be dipped, and then, by someone who knows what they're doing.
- Acetone will remove any loose debris and artificial toning, is considered harmless and is recommended if you're not certain of the coin's recent history. If you just bought a raw coin on E-Bay or at auction and you're uncertain if someone handled it like pocket change, if you don't acetone it a fingerprint can show up in a few years that could have been avoided.
If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.3 -
I really like them like they are. I wouldn’t do it

Well, if you must have them I will have to charge you full book value which would be 75.00 (ms66) & 150.00 (ms66+) and for another 50.00 you can have the rest of the set and the complete D set. As I only paid 40 for both and o'course grading etc.

Has the FBL definition been changed? the middle section used to be just NGC concern.

Well then, true these never had a shot at FL. My order arrived today and now that they are in hand again I am scratching my head at why I ever sent these in. Obviously, I was thinking 65 FL and that would have been worth the cost. But, when I compare the 66+ to the 64 I realize there is a world of difference and I also feel lucky to have even gotten the plus or 66 in the first place on the good ones.
NO FL NO WHERE!

64 is not good on this coin

64's

The best ones still not good enough.

On the upside, the next coins going in will have zero flaws +/- a few
