Smoked coin?
A few weeks ago I overheard two dealers discussing that a coin had been "smoked". What does that mean? Artificially toned by smoke?

That’s a totally new term to me!
WTH?
Covers hairlines. See a certain 1885 trade dollar
Cigar smoke blown at a coin, such as a seated dollar. Will kind of gray out an old cleaning.
Often you can smell the cigar smoke toning.
What a sooty post. dont be such an ash.
The recently sold one? How can you tell?

Dumb question maybe, but does it have to be a cigar? Or will any smoke do?

Most of the time the toning is brown and uneven. Dip residue is brown but this color tends to "flow" around the coin's relief.
Anyone have an example they can post?
No, not the Eliasberg coin.
This one has been BBQ'd

I bought some Peace Dollars in a private sale through a FaceBook BST page that reeked of cigar/cigarette smoke when I took the out of the 2x2s. They had a film on them but I could still tell that they were cleaned. Rinsed them under warm water to remove the film. I figured that the prior owner was just a heavy smoker. Never knew that smoke could be intentionally used in this manner.
Smoke, heat, chemicals, storage....No end to the methods used to tarnish or alter coins surfaces for profit....I am glad that I am not in the business of buying/selling coins.....too many pitfalls. Just happy collecting coins...Cheers, RickO
This was the case with the guy on ebay who tried to claim I cleaned a coin before returning it to him. Smelled like an ashtray.
Collector, occasional seller
Coins stored in a cigar box will pick up the smell. That's how I kept neat "treasures" as a kid.
In the “old days” back in the ‘70s, the smell of cigar smoke could lead you to where the coin show was. Thank goodness those days are gone! Perhaps the dealers could sit and “restore” their coins right at their tables.
That is absolutely disgusting. Is this a case of smoking gone bad? I can’t imagine this is an improvement over lightly cleaned.
