Could you start collecting a "set" that you don't collect now?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just musing. We all have our collecting preferences even if it's varied.
Could you begin a set of coins that you don't collect now?
Could you work up an interest for it?
If you'd care to mention it, that might be interesting. :)

I just started one. From 0 to 3 pieces in 2019. I'll look into posting some photos.

I’m prone to start collecting something new at any time, things I would scoff at in the past I’m totally into now, so yes. Anything is possible, it’s like one day I notice something I knew about but see it with new eyes. Sometimes I can be taught why something is cool too or nudged and influenced which I don’t think is bad either. Some things I’ve always wanted to get into but they have to wait until other goals are met and my focus can free up enough to properly concentrate. It’s complicated but I have the collector gene I guess.

Yeah. There are dozens of things I wish I could collect that I don't have the money to. There is no shortage of interest.

Civil War store cards/merchant tokens. Most are very small population yet available to the non 1 percenters.

These are great and a lot of fun if you like rarity. It's very easy to get R8 and R9 tokens from the low to upper 3 figures. My only problem is that there are so many of them that those 3 figure coins start to add up!

Just stick with the copper ones. ;)

Great advice! But I think it's too late for me as I already have silver, white metal and brass!

    Should I? Is another question

I am looking to add the English kings before Edward the Confessor to my set. I have two of the easy ones, Aethelred II (“The unready”) and Cnut. The the others are much harder, starting with Alfred the Great who ruled in one form or another from 871 to 899 AD.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Were my collecting focused on the more expensive slabbed coins in pursuit of ever higher grades, probably not. But since I can be satisfied with circulated raw coins and albums, I have room in my budget to pursue additional sets. And much of my enjoyment comes from study, search, discovery, and acquisition - so that is what I plan to do.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

I agree with this sentiment. I just love to see coins in albums. It make it so much easier to view all together. Committing more $ to coins not in slabs, or even buying in slab and cracking more expensive coins, can be risky financially. So I end up with coins in slabs that I can't talk myself into cracking and those in albums that someday my heirs will go to sell and get taken for a ride because the coins are somehow not XF40, they are net VF20 because of that rim ding, as an example.

At this time, I tend to look for individual coins that I find appealing or with interesting historical connections.... I did some sets in years past... Cheers, RickO

Gem pastel rose flagstone toned Franklin Halves with black rims.
    But I’ve only seen one.
So it’s not worth even trying.

    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

    Yes, just nothing too ambitious.

No. I find it too boring collecting sets that depict the same obverse and reverse for every year. That's why I collect early commems almost exclusively. That is besides my Dansco 7070 Type Set (Complete).

  • Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭✭✭

Sure. I'm currently considering Standing Liberty Quarters, Seated Quarters, and Barber Dimes. Will likely dive into one fairly soon. Just need to decide the grade I want to chase. Still doing some math around that, as I have a limited budget, and it's important to me that I complete the set in a specific grade.

Not really a Type collector...that style sort of bores me.

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.

If I had the funds in my coin budget and the pieces weren't priced too aggressively, I would try to corner the CAC pre 1834 gold market. >:)

That one is the entire set.
    Congrats on completing it. :p

I think it's good to always have a primary interest and several secondary interests. For example, I have a Capped Bust Dime XF set, a Fiji pre-decimal Dansco album, a Mexico Type Dansco album, and a type set of small size US currency that are all secondary interests. That way, if your primary interest is pretty obscure/nearly complete/pricey to augment, you always have something to look for at random B&M dealers or shows. You just have to find some niche that catches your eye, and off you go.

I pulled one a couple weeks ago from a proof set, along with a pastel dime.

All pastel, didn't notice black rims. Some black spots intermixed.

Probably will send off for slabbing.

I took up a new set within the past couple of years. It's not a traditional set, but a collection of my favorite 20 commems.

I could easily see doing a set of Walkers or maybe even buff nickels at some point. We'll see.

Always working on a "set" of some sort by my definition, probably always will.

  • sniocsusniocsu Posts: 1,291 ✭✭✭

Yes I have and yes I will. I got a good job recently, and am trying to give people my money for nice coins; I used to be hardcore into just one group of coins — now I am collecting most things; I have definitely lost my focus on my core collection

  • coinbufcoinbuf Posts: 11,867 ✭✭✭✭✭

Absolutely, I would love to do a set of Buffalos, WLHs, and a seated series. However lack of time to properly research each series and hunt down some nice ones (plus the funds needed) are holding me back.

I did a date set of Capped Bust Halves in grades from VF-AU a few years ago. Had all except for the 15/2. I lost interest and sold it a few years ago. Now I'm into Trade dollars and have all the dates and mint marks except the 73-CC, I seem to be losing interest again and may sell out and start something like a 7070 set without the gold. It would be fun to search for choice coins in circulated grades for each example.

    Trade $'s

Nope...I'm good with just the one
    Maybe a box of 20 10

Yep. I recently started picking up 1938-D Buffalos in different holders. Different tpg’s, etc. WHY!!!! Up to 20.
