Collecting Habits: Do you limit yourself to CAC only coins?

The no preference option refers to a general willingness to consider both NGC and PCGS coins without regard to whether it is stickered or not. The goal is to ascertain the relative percentages that are CAC only (either service), PCGS-CAC only, or NGC-CAC only.

You don't have PCGS only or NGC only, as choices.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

I'm sorry for the poor design. I can't edit the poll. The poll is meant to be general. Typically, do you limit your searches to PCGS/NGC only coins, NGC only coins, PCGS only coins, and the fourth option is other/ no preference? The answer depends on your willingness to view and consider non-CAC coins, not necessarily that you have or have not bought CAC only.

Your poll choices only allow me to pick that I collect CAC only, or that I have no preference...

Well I do have a preference to collect coins whether they have stickers or not. Doesn't seem to be a choice in your poll.

I should have included that as well. Select other and post (if willing) if NGC only (CAC or not) and PCGS only (CAC or not).

    I collect coins only.

Otherwise, PCGS only (CAC or not). My personal preferences differ from CAC's preferences.

I'll buy NGC and cross it.

I contend that in the lower realm, (sub $500?....certainly sub $200), it's still hit and miss whether the coin has even made the trip for CAC consideration. For that reason, I go with my own judgement rather than thinking I have to put all of my eggs into the CAC basket.

Many here have lost there way. Coins are not blue chip equities. They are coins. I buy all kinds of stuff from drecky cleaned Morgan Dollars to classic commems with gold cacs.

I used to have no preference meaning that I would buy NGC or PCGS with or without CAC.

Now, I'm leaning more towards PCGS only but I still don't care, if it has a CAC sticker or not, as long as I like the coin.

I try to buy nice coins at fair prices. I generally limit myself to PCGS. Quite often the nice coins I find have CAC stickers. Sometimes they don’t. In general, I prefer coins with CAC stickers because they’re easier to sell. Not sure how that’s going to pigeon-hole into your poll.

PCGS. The sticker doesn't matter because I scrape them off. I simply can't be bothered.

I would have voted for "Presented with equal PCGS coins, price of the one with CAC a little higher, not CAC stickered a little lower .... CAC is my choice". But this situation is not a common occurrence. Rare actually. I guess I'm voting for more choices of answers in the poll.

For high value coins (usually keys)I may want a second opinion. But really do I need a second opinion on a "cold" (majority of a set). I have eyes that can disagree what matches my set. A key is like "cancer", I might want a CAC confirmation to double check the proper grade and authenticity.🤔

My 1824 CAC bust quarter was an example. I still can't figure out why it was cheaper than others being offered, a good deal and sign of a soft market or someone needing it gone IMO.

I prefer PCGS, but will still buy NGC if I like the coin enough. I don’t limit myself to only buying CAC’d coins.

I do slightly prefer PCGS over NGC in MOST cases however I could care less if it has a cac sticker. In fact I would prefer without the cac. A sticker on the slab is almost as bad as the nasty toning on a nice piece of silver.

I prefer PCGS and CAC but will not limit myself. Of the 20 coins I own, only 3 are NGC - 2 are CAC. I have 2 PCGS coins with no CAC.

There should have been another option with regard to avoiding purchase of coins with a CAC sticker. There are few if any bargains to be had on CAC stickered coins and they typically come fully priced if not over priced.

  • dcarrdcarr Posts: 9,201 ✭✭✭✭✭

I can't participate in the poll because there is no appropriate choice for me.
I have never purchased a single "CAC" coin, ever.

My collecting style is "bargain hunter" and also "exonumia".
CAC coins tend to be fully priced (deservedly so, in most cases). So to a great extent buying a CAC coin precludes the use of one's own grading abilities to find the "diamond in the rough". And CAC doesn't apply to a lot of the exonumia I collect (partly because PCGS only does a relatively small subset of it).

I Personally don't need for someone else to tell me what I need to like. My grandkids like some of the stickers on bananas. Doesn't mean the bananas are any good

Didn't find a category that fit me so I didn't vote. ~98% of my slabbed coins are PCGS, ~2% are NGC. CAC stickers are "preferred" but not required.

So I prefer PCGS/CAC but I will buy NGC and non CAC.

The easy option you should of added was I don't care if it has a CAC sticker or not. That is my correct answer over the no preference answer I choose in the poll!

Agree. The poll was seriously flawed.

To be fair to the OP it seems difficult to properly execute a poll around here.

When buying from pictures only and it's a high value coin for me I generally prefer CAC for peace of mind unless it's a dealer I trust the opinion of. When buying in person which is rare for me I would rather pay less for one without a sticker since I have my eyes on it in hand and can decide for myself if it meets my quality standards - that's harder to do from pictures alone.

Some on my favorite coins probably wouldn't CAC and that doesn't bother me even a tiny bit. Other favorites that I may not have bought without the sticker as they were high value and from pictures alone and I'm glad I stretched for them. So I guess I find myself in the middle of the two CAC extreme ends - imagine that!

If you collect U.S. coins, it still is an option, but it's getting harder and harder.

When I was dealer buying raw and getting it certified was a fairly easy way a way to make money. The trouble was finding raw coins of significance that didn't have problems. Today it's got to be much harder unless you can tap into an old collection that has been off the market for many years.

So far as tokens go, more and more of them are certified, much to my dislike. I really prefer them in the albums.

Foreign coins are becoming more of certified market too, but not nearly as fast. There are still a lot of raw coins left to collect.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Are you against cracking them and placing them in albums?

What kind of albums do you use for your tokens?

Tokens are an area where you can still buy many raw items but I do see slabs coming into play now.

When buying a coin, I do not limit myself in any way. That being said, if it were an investment coin (high quality, high value) I would likely go for PCGS CAC...Cheers, RickO

I primarily buy PCGS, NGC and older ANACS material, along with an occasional raw piece. I prefer PCGS graded material. I honestly pay no attention to stickers on the slab.

The fourth option was meant to be the catch all/everyone else category. My goal was to estimate the percentage of respondents that were CAC only and to distill the data further by service-CAC combo if applicable.

No way - I probably have like 5 CAC coins in inventory. At last show of say 50 tables did not c any other CAC coins. All 5 are priced around CPG for CAC. No takers at last show and only 1 person asked a price. Going thru 3 boxes of Commems from a wholesaler setup next to me no CAC there whatsoever. I have retailed CAC coins on eBay. I did buy a nice (non CAC) Pcgs MS 64 RI 50c below CDN bid at $95.

Never run into somebody that buys only CAC lol.

Most coming in bourse room probably never heard of it or can afford material say above $300. Others buying coins close to melt. Many have no concept how price coins or understand CAC material wb marked up higher vs non CAC. As the CDN has started breaking out bid (and CPG) by CAC and non CAC for many issues (a brilliant very needed move) my understanding of pricing for CAC has improved.

I did c one fellow buy a couple Mexico 50 peso gold (raw) for a few bucks over melt.
