How many over 55 have sold their entire collection or most of it?

Or are in the process of disposing of it?

The true numismatists do that several times in a lifetime.
Like a good little numismaddict, i keep adding to the collection.
I just can't stop.
If they are fairly well to do, are in good health and have a good collection, I would say the number is fairly low. I think the prime selling ages are somewhere in the 70s.
I don’t agree with that. I only sold a lot stuff in the 1970s when I played with the idea of being a dealer. Otherwise I have only sold small sections, like my set of half cents by die variety or a the two date sets of Morgan Dollars I had at one time.
Good point.
Make this a forever, and final disposition.
I have NOT sold 1 coin on my head! But I am Still forced to work .

I sold most of mine at age 66. Now I only dabble, drool, and covet.

Not yet.... Mine is still growing and I'm well over 3 scores years old....
There is a truth there.
I'm 54 and have sold most of my collection over the last 6 or 8 years. Hope to back in as a buyer in the future.
.
54 here and I own more than I ever did.

Well, I guess I'm not a true numismatist even though I've been publishing articles and exhibiting (and winning awards) for over 30 years. While I've sold some items over the years, I'll keep adding to the core collection as long as I'm alive. As I approach the big 7-0, I'm still having too much fun. And yes, this non-numismatist made an educational presentation at FUN this year and will be exhibiting at the Summer ANA. Just pontificating from behind a keyboard is not for me.

Still periodically buying !!!
I resimble that remark 🤪. I have no intention of selling my collection. They will most definitely be passed down to my family. For all of the time I’ve spent to search out and purchase these coins I think my head would explode if I sold them. They are part of me. I love my collection.
Late sixties, have sold part, but only to raise funds for another project. Still searching for items for other sets.

I have been reading numerous threads over the past few weeks, can I assume that I am on the younger side of collecting at 36? I inherited a collection from my great grandfather in my teens and have been going ever since.
Only time will tell if I ever sell anything, but for the past 20 years I just keep on collecting.
My inventory has increased some as my online and show income supplements my other income.
At some point the numismatic may be liquidated over a period of time.
Many who are retired are in the coin business.
I would recommend against liquidating financial assets like stocks to do coins. In 1964 the 50-d nickel the fad, in 1986 generic slabbed ms 65 dollars hot, which numismatic fad of today will future gen diss?
I'm taking mine with me. Sort of like those mummies in Egypt did.
And if anybody digs me up and steals my collection, i'll put a curse on ya!
Yes
I had fun collecting my sets and had fun selling my sets.
It was time.! I still miss them every day, but have pictures
of them.
It is still a wonderful hobby to learn about early coins .

Sold most of mine years ago. Did well and like a fool started back. Cannot help coveting old coins.
Since I turned 55 in 2010, I have been steadily selling off all my extras, and non-core pieces. Still at it after 9 years.
I was told that it takes as long to liquidate as it was to accumulate - so I started early in hopes I get to a core collection of about 150 coins that could all go to auction.
My only hiccup is that I started a new set of XF-AU Capped Bust Halves to give me something to look for at shows. Been fun and these are usually in demand when it comes time to sell.

I sold a complete PCGS Morgan set several years ago and I'm currently consolidating what built up afterward – meaning selling "stuff" that made sense or interested me at one time, but no longer does. It feels liberating to see the pile get smaller, and for a few much better coins to take the place of many.
I sold my entire US coin collection thru Legend Auctioms fall 2016 .
That DW collection .
However I have expanded my world coin
collection especially scarce and rare crowns .

Crap. I just turned 55 last month and I'm just starting to collect.
Am I doing this wrong?
I started at age 55! : )
Ive bought three collections from local coin club members who were up in age and developed health issues. Nothing really high value, the collections were from 5k to 33k. each of the individuals passed like within 3 months of buying their collections however.
I'm almost 50 and starting to get serious about selling all the stuff I purchased from age 25-40...
I am 52. I started my certified MS Walker set when I was 39. It is now 97% complete. I plan to finish within the next year or two. After that; I am going to just sit back and enjoy it. I will still be buying other coins but not at the same rate or level.

I am older than most - have never sold my coins....Have no intention of selling...I acquired them because I like coins... unless that changes, I will be enjoying them until I am no longer a viable carbon unit. Cheers, RickO
Closer to 60 than to 50 here....I've been slowly selling off some dupes and non-core holdings.
Once upon a time I envisioned becoming a dealer, so I acquired a lot of stock - then I decided I
like weekends off
I still acquire junk silver and bullion when I come across it reasonable, and
pick up large cents for myself when I find them, and want list items for friends.

I'm 53 1/2, and for U.S. coins, I'm on sell-out/trade-out number 3.
First was about 20 years ago, I made some bad purchases, so I did a restart, and the market helped me out, no monetary losses.
Second was about 10 years ago, I did a reset, to refocus on different areas in U.S. coins. I also became more interested in currency. The market rewarded me, no complaints.
Third started about 2 years ago. I sold-out of ancients when that bubble started to burst. Last year, I decided the market downturn was accelerating for U.S. coins, and nobody to leave them to, so, I'm out at about even. It took a lot of work, more trades than outright sales.
Now, just about everything in U.S. coins is a flip for me, to help me with currency trading & interests. Unless the market rebounds really well, really soon, buy & hold is permanently dead to me for U.S. coins.
I wish it were otherwise, and I really hope that I am wrong, but, this time, the downturn looks & feels different.
I started selling nearly everything when I turned 65. No one else in the family has any interest in coins and I hated to think what might happen if they had to dispose of the collection. The few items I have left are probably worth less than $1000. I have no regrets about selling. I think it was the right move at the right time.
53 and just starting over in coins ... again.
I have investments, real estate, low debt, and a good career.
It's for enjoyment, keeping mentally stimulated, the hunt, and part of a longterm second career plan.
My job is seasonal and in the off season I like hobbies.
I dabble in Baseball cards and coins and to some extent stamps.
With an eye towards "retirement" within a decade, I can envision a second career as a dealer in collectibles.

Within these less than 4 yrs until I reach 55, I will fall into this category.
Sold nearly all of mine in the last three years. Kept a few things: 12pc. Gold type set, Hand-picked MS Short set of WL Halves, PF Walker, Wells Fargo So-Called, Pie shaped Curaçao two bits and a few other things.
I've always said, if I retained my collection until the day I died my wife would kill me, even though I was already dead. So at age 72 my three core collections are gone, sold the type coins 10 years ago, commemoratives in 2011 and colonials in 2017, all at auction.

If silver and gold increase 3X, I will sell. Since I don’t expect that to happen, the kiddos will get it all.
This sounds like a compelling reason why NOT TO SELL my collection!!

For sure, I won't be selling you my collection.
I knew it would happen.
I have gotten rid of lots, and lots of Lincolns, Jeffersons, and other common stuff.
Going for quality over quantity. It would be easier to sell.
Everything is all right!
I am 70 and still have nearly all of mine. My heirs will benefit from my collection. I have left them with detailed information on how to do that and my sons aren't totally ignorant about coins as one still collects on a small scale.
Or for certain not to@jdimmick
Just turned 40, plan to continue buying and selling as the opportunity arises, mostly selling the early lots and estates/common coins and stuff that doesn't "fit" into my main collection. For the good stuff, I anticipate a long holding window.
Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.
I have assembled almost all of my $2.50 Liberty set after turning 55.
