So I'm minding my own business and just trying to pick out a nice 1970-S large date and this happens

That's a nice surprise. Did you pack it in there previously by accident or did someone else put that roll together?

It's an estate roll from an eclectic old man. It might have been his pride and joy and he just stashed it the roll for safekeeping.

The problem is I now have 36 more rolls to go through and a spot check tells me that most of them are just boring roll-set 1970s copper.

Sweet! Hey, my son needs a VDB for his type set, want to sell it?

I think so. I need someone to tell me 100% it's not a proof first. I'm not qualified to determine that.

Time to break out the chemistry set and turn 36 rolls into Peacocks and sell them for $400 each coin.

Check your coin’s diagnostics for being a proof down below, I’ll give you a link. In my opinion, I don’t see any diagnostics and the reverse rim isn’t thick enough to qualify as a matte proof. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/608346/1909-vdb-the-first-matte-proof-lincoln-die-diagnostics-informational-thread

The 09 in the OP's post is not a proof. Nothing about it says proof. Surfaces, rims etc.

That may all be true, but I want it to be a proof.

You can "identify" it as a proof all day long if it makes ya happy, just down sell it as such. ;-)

The "S" mints from 1968-74 are some of my favorites. I wish I
could come across a hoard like that.

    Nice hoard of copper!

Well, the 1970-S cent rolls could contain a 1970-S small date and/or a 1970-S Doubled die obverse (#1).
Either would be a nice find.

    Nice find, @Iwog .
If you decide to dispose of some of the S mint rolls send me a PM.

And I concur that your VDB is definitely not a proof.

Any of those 70-s' happen to be small dates?

  • IwogIwog Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭

I don't know for sure but I doubt it. I have 1970-1974 rolls and the edges of all are nice and red except the 1970-d coins. You can tell someone carefully handled them by the edge and I'm gonna guess it was to find the small dates.

However I've owned these for about 20 years so it's possible that no one has checked for the much rarer DDO. I've checked a few rolls and so far nothing. The strikes/polish lines on many of these match so they are original.

I had opportunity to go thru about 8 BU rolls of 70-S cents a couple of years ago. I'm gonna send em back. I didn't find any 1909's. Just a few small dates.
