But to be worth $421, I would think it would have to at least 65. I think it might 58! :D

Toners aren’t priced using guides and that looks pretty nice. Would love to see a good pic.

Sure! To me best case was 63, 64 tops. That would be quite a color bump on a 63 or 64, but at least two bidders saw $400+ in that coin!

    Reverse Pic:

It does remind me of the "Dick in the Dirt" toned Pilgrim that Russ brokered to a board member (Fatman IIRC) about a dozen years ago.

I don’t know if that’s excessive or not as I don’t follow this particular coin but when I price toners I don’t compare toner prices to white coin prices, I compare them to other toner realized prices.

Same here. I was obviously too conservative, but I did think there was a risk the coin was a 58, which would not be a $420 coin. On the other hand, if it gets a 65, it could be a $1,500+ coin, which is probably what those 2 bidders were thinking.

I don't think it looks anything like that! :)

I would have taken the chance. Could even be a proof in hiding. He has free returns if it turns out to not be UNC.

    Whoo

How did I miss that ?

Great looking Columbian, but not for me. Wonder what grade it will get, if submitted?

becomes awfully annoying as a ebay seller to pay for what amounts to a buyer approval service

Based solely on the obverse picture, I would think the buyer would be buried. But then I scrolled down and saw the reverse. WOW! If the seller accepts returns, I'd bid to the moon on that coin.

If you advertise a coin as Uncirculated and it's not, it is coming back. Which is exactly what I said. Did you even read the auction description?

Not to mention he is the one offering the free returns. He does not have to do that.

This, along with ability to withdraw bids at any time for any reason, is another example of how ebay is not a true auction house in the way most of us would define it.

Thats amazing color for a Columbian

Grade is another story, but even in a 63 grade with that color, its a neat find

Would be tough to assign a grade with those pics and that toning. I agree, 421 would be too much for a 58 but if it's unc they'll do well.

The pictures are too badly executed to rate a bid of $400+.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Seller says it's BU. He offers free returns. If it is not, it goes right back, no questions asked.

I would have paid that in a second.

That was probably by design, and paid off.

Yup, did not even think that through when I set my snipe. I still would have set it at less than 400, I figured it would take 250 or so with aggressive bidders. But good to see the toned coin market is not dead yet!

  • yspsalesyspsales Posts: 2,646 ✭✭✭✭✭

I look for Colombian toners on occasion, but $500 after grading seems fully valued.

    But who cares?

Some collector will probably be very happy with this work of art once this is slabbed.

I have a AU and sold a MS example.

Nice color coins... but not in this league of color.

Hard to say, but the sails look like they have nice definition.

A little white balance on the image might give a better idea of the toning.

Damn... still out of my comfort zone.

Ebay prices realized are not like Heritage. Buyer just wants to see the coin. If it’s not a rip, he sends it back. No risk to buyer. Wouldn’t matter if the final price was $10k.

Those are not impossible to find PL, toned or both
