There is NO question that Bill Buckner takes this award...hand down! Up 5-3 in the 10th inning in Fenway Park, Red Sox Nation on the verge of finally getting a WS win after an eternity of waiting...Then comes the dribbler by Mookie Wilson, which almost any grandmother could catch...oh NOOOOO the wicket shot, game ovah.
Of course Rocket was on the mound and developed a blister, and was replaced by Schiraldi, then the wild pitch by Bob Stanley...game tied. The rest is sad Red Sox history.
Buckner was hounded without mercy and retired in 1988 after trades to the Angels and then the Royals. Ever the forgiving fan faithful, Buckner returned to Fenway Park in 1990 to a standing ovation, his painful penance having been served in spades.
He moved to Idaho and developed malls and housing complexes, one being named Fenway Park.
I always wondered why they didn't DH Buckner and put Henderson at first base for that game.
Your memory is a little faulty here.
The game took place in Shea Stadium, not Fenway.
Also, it's a little unclear from the way you worded it, but the game was already tied when Mookie hit his grounder.
I stand corrected on the venue, but perhaps you missed the "wild pitch by Bob Stanley...game tied"
No big deal, it was a horribly disappointing moment in Red Sox history.

Thanks but I've seen that FG attempt about a thousand times since he missed it. Barely any wind at all and what there was blowing was with the kick. The guy was a top 10 kicker in the NFL then was out of football a year later. Complete choke job.
As Wiki says it: "After the Bills waived him, Norwood initially returned home to Northern Virginia and disappeared completely from the public eye for a number of years."
I feel sorry for the guy but he 100% blew it in the biggest moment of his career and that last statement pretty much proves he felt the same himself.
No more a choke job than a WS pitcher giving up a hit in a WS late inning, even though he gets out two thirds of the batters he faces.
Now let's consider the Buckner error. Buckner boasted a .991 fielding average. His 1 in 100 blunder was clearly a choke. Biggest in history, maybe not, but certainly was on a major stage.
@Coinstartled you won't get any debate from me about Buckner being a part of this list. Any MLB player letting a fairly slow grounder go thru their legs would be shameful enough but having it happen on the stage it did made it much much worse.
We can agree to disagree on Norwood and there's nothing wrong with that.

A bit of research on Norwood was quite revealing. Career he was 37 of 61 at the 40-49 distance. 91 season he was 5 of 9 during the regular season. 47 yards (being on the longer side of 40-49) was essentially a 50-50% proposition.
Better kicker may have made it...or may have missed as well.

Adam Vinatieri kicked a 45 yarder in a blizzard to put a playoff game into OT,then 20 minutes later won the game with a 23 yarder. A couple weeks later hit a 48 yarder to beat the Rams in the Super Bowl. Then two years later hit a 41 yarder to win another Super Bowl.
This better kicker didn't miss with the big game on the line regardless of distance or outdoor conditions.

Dude the Giants-Bills Super Bowl was at the end of the 1990 season not 1991,you posted the link to the following year's stats.
That being said,i goofed as well, I thought i had clicked on 1990 FG% on the same site but hadn't. The 9th ranking i was looking at wasn't his FG% but FG attempts.
Thanks for helping point out he was an even chittier kicker than the world thought he was.
Maybe had the Bills had a better kicker they might have just blown three straight SBs instead of four.
LOL, you're right, I sure did. His 1990 numbers were about the same though. 6 for 10 from 40-49. No attempts from 50+. So he had no leg and wasn't accurate Heck, he missed 2 from 20-29.

Not really a fair comparison though. You can't expect the same performance/outcome from guys of different abilities. Vinatieri is a legend. Norwood wasn't. Norwood missed a kick you'd expect him to miss (based on his track record).
I bet a guy $50 at Super Bowl party that Norwood would miss that kick. I figured with the added pressure it was a slightly better then 50/50 odds that he would would miss
For me he came through in the clutch

Cmon Tabe, the comparison was meant for this comment: "Better kicker may have made it...or may have missed as well."
How many other kickers since Norwood have had the chance to kick a SB winning field goal? Off the top of my head Vinatieri was the only one and got the chance twice, he didn't miss. So yes it is a very fair comparison whether you agree or not. Vinatieri didn't become a "legend" until he did what Norwood couldn't.
I'm done arguing with you two over your kicker.
Before the extra point was extended, that was a 98% chance kick and if you missed one in a big game, you choked. 30 yd plus field goals are anything but automatic. 47 yards is anything but.

Yeah that kick wasn't with seconds left in the game for the win but you go ahead and do you. At this point you're just looking to argue for the hell of it. Maybe you & Tabe can argue over Vinatieri, you think he's a "choker" while he thinks he's a "legend".

Clearly none of us comes here to play Mah Jong.
You are assuming that Norwood would have otherwise made the kick if the pressure of the Super Bowl was not on his shoulders. It was a legitimate kick that had the distance but missed. He was at the outside band of his range. To call that a choke is like calling Brady and Belichick honest.

NFC Championship Game, 1997 season. Falcons at Minnesota. Falcons lead by 3 and Vikings QB (Randall Cunningham maybe??) takes his team down the field in the waning seconds. I think it was about a 40 yd FG, and I don't think Gary Anderson had missed a kick the entire season. And the rest is history. The "Dirty Bird" Falcons with Jamaal Anderson's career year get to the Super Bowl as Gary Anderson misses the kick which would send the game into OT.

Your problem here is Brady isn't a cheater or a dirtbag, that is just your uninformed opinion. Go ahead and bring up Deflategate, something that was never proven that he had any part in. His only "guilt" was not handing over a phone for a SIXTH time before he got rid of it, the previous five times of searching his phone came up with nothing. There were science departments all over the company proving those balls lost air from the cold and when the NFL later tested these same theories during the season with games played in very cold weather they conveniently decided not to makes the results known. Which was pretty funny seeing that the NFL spent 2 years and 20 Million dollars during their Deflategate investigation and court proceedings but didn't bother to publish something that would have proved they were 100% full of crap the entire time. That dog & pony show in court had zero to do with air pressure in footballs and everything to do with Roger Goodell's ability to play God when ti comes to the NFL Player's CBA. It was all a Power trip, nothing more nothing less.
You want to call Belichick a cheater & a dirtbag too? The NFL never caught him cheating at all during Spygate, recording other teams hand signals is still legal today, you just can't do it standing on the sideline. Belichick's problem was not that he cheated but he was blatantly arrogant about continuing to have someone videotaping from the same spot after the NFL sent out to each team statements saying you can't do this anymore from the sideline. The tapes proved to be nothing and it was never proven that NE gained any real competitive edge from them either. Then we had a Boston based news columnists who thought he got some great scoop that NE supposedly videotaped the Rams walkthrough the day before the SB that also turned out to be 100% false and was nothing more than a disgruntled ex-Pats team employee who had been fired and made up a story to get NE back. The columnists name is John Tomase who has beared his soul here in Boston hundreds of times since then admitting he got it all wrong.
Sure as an NFL head coach Belichick is arrogant & curt and anyone that has watched a single one of his press conferences can see that guy can be a total prick, all true but none of that makes him a cheater or dishonest. That being said, the guy cheated on his own wife with someone else's wife and that is 100% a dirtbag thing to do.

Just another case of a manager being completely incompetent
Yes, MacNamira knew that Buckner was always playing on bad legs, and he had used Stapleton as a defensive replacement in prior games. Why didn’t he make that switch in the most important inning of the season? It was chapter 15 in the “Curse of the Bambino,” equal to the stupidity when Joe McCarthy started Dennis Galehouse in the play-off game against the Yankees in the late ‘40s.

As adults though we don't get to have that excuse. I don't believe I called Brady and Belichick dirtbags, but both of them have broken the rules of the game and that qualifies as cheaters. Not easy to dispute that as their actions have been penalized.
As far as cheating husbands and all around unsavory behavior goes, I guess we have to decide that stuff on our own. I always figured that infidelity was a family issue. Criminal activity though was a disqualifier, at least anything of a major consequence.

I don't define what Buckner did as a "choke", though; he was just a bad first baseman. The "choke" came when his manager put him out on the field in that situation.

No big deal, it was a horribly disappointing moment in Red Sox history.
Buckner let the ball through in a tie game...so not quite the choke job as its made out to be.

Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas.
Forgot one more. Latrell Sprewell on P.J. Carlissimo.

LOL, you're right, I sure did. His 1990 numbers were about the same though. 6 for 10 from 40-49. No attempts from 50+. So he had no leg and wasn't accurate
Heck, he missed 2 from 20-29.

And Vinatieri missed a 31 yard FG in SB 38.
