I love the range of responses! I say 58 all day but could see it in a mint state holder depending on remaining high point luster visible in hand. Nice coin!!
55 would be my guess... the hit by the date and a lot of small dings in the obverse fields bring it down... of course, magnification makes them look bad.... in hand, may not be so obvious. It is a coin I would consider if the price was reasonable. Cheers, RickO
I'm in the 58 camp too. I see hidden luster in the devices. Yeah, there's bag marks too... If it goes 55 I wouldn't be shocked... but I like it at 58 nonetheless.
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
Thanks for the guesses; the coin actually came back from PCGS as "AU details, cleaned". I paid $800 for the coin from a sharp dealer and was frankly surprised at the problem grade.
So the pic's luster is accurate around the stars. Especially the hand and branch area. Whenever I see coins with the luster removed like that it almost always means whizzed in a fashion. The high points protected the remaining luster. Otherwise circulation rarely results in that look.
Still.. I thought they would net grade it. I am way to conservative with grading and i try to think like a tpg which means being a bit more liberal then how I feel.
Coin is not cleaned IMO, but has nice luster and surfaces, much better than many other T$1s I have seen; another service did straight grade it the next time around.

Nothing in those images suggests cleaning or whizzing to me.
That is a great question! I will echo this...
