I like relatively inexpensive coins that give you a lot of bang for your buck. Historically and numismatcally (sp?).
War Nickels fit the bill. Especially the unique 1942 Proof.
The low hanging fruit facts:
27,600 reported mintage.
The only War Nickel Proof.
The first time the mintmark letter P was used.
The silver content of 2 War Nickels was more than the silver contained in 1 Dime.
A couple more advanced facts courtesy of "United States Proof Coins 1936 - 1942" by @RogerB :
The Type 2 Nickels were made between October and December 1942.
This was going on when during the time that mother was born, Nov.,'42. (Not in the book, lol.)
The Mint was struggling with the new alloy. Only 47% of the 58k Type 2 Proof coins struck were deemed good compared to 88% for the Type 1.
The only minor variety I can see is the over polishing of the reverse die, weakening the letters on the perimeter.

Yep. That's one of the few facts missing from the book. If I'd known maybe I could have worked that in someplace.....

Lots of cool varieties for such a short set. I have a gem set somewhere with the overdates, doubled dies and a off center

I have long thought that the 1942 Proof war nickel is a terrific bargain. It’s a one year Proof type coin and one of the last examples of where the government produced something frivolous before the Big War.
I bought a war nickel set in an old Capital holder a few years ago. The 42-P had fantastic steps. Got it home and later found it to be a proof.

I love the early Jefferson proofs. I agree, a lot of bang for the buck reckoned in terms of scarcity / appeal / price.
Incidentally, I got a war nickel in change today for the first time in several years.
