Kokua .... please render your opinion on DDO1 VS DDO2

I am placing the 55/55 hunt on the back burner at the moment due to the availability for my ideal as well as the $$$ I am willing to shell for an RD.
Today I am learning a great deal of 1972 DDO Hub doubling
There is a significant price different between the top two DDOs ..... >$850 VS >$400
Should I go for "The BIG ONE" as they market it?
If were not for the existence of DDO1, DDO's 2,3,7 and 8 would be more popular
FYI: DDO's 2,4,5 and 7 are rotated clockwise where DDO's 1,3,6,8 are rotated counter clockwise.
Here is the example of the significance doubling of DDO1
.....and the next kin DDO2

DDO 1 is the only way to go. I plan on getting one myself one day.
I tried to but you pulled the thread.
I copied for posterity....................
"Yes, but be very picky. There are a ton of 72 DDO #1's out there."
to add.......... no spots and strong for the grade if you are going to buy one.
DDO-001 is the dramatic one.
Why go for DDO-002 or the others? There are hundreds like that (across several dates).

On second thought, you live in a tropical environment. Copper doesn't like heat and humidity. Gold is much more stable in that environment.
Go Big or go home.
I agree with the others. DDO-001 is the way to go. Keep your powder dry and wait for the right one. Personally, I would avoid any crazy toning and stick to full red. An older holder will give peace of mind regarding stability.
I think you got a point there my friend although PCGS holder is water proof isn't it? But not Air Proof?
Did you mean OGH or the old fatty NGC?
Neither. Copper will turn in a PCGS holder in the wrong environment.
From what I have read, there was a mint employee who told his bosses that had found a way to coin dies quicker. Unfortunately his new method resulted in multiple doubled dies, which translates to a large number of doubled dies 1972 cents.
The most collectible doubled die is the really big one. The others are worth lower prices.
DDO-001 is spectacular, but DDO-004 is far less spectacular but much more valuable.
2,3,7, and 8 are all nice DDOs, and would be worth a lot more, IMO, if die 1 didn't exist.
55/55 or bust!
You'd still want it if you had 10 of the "pretenders"
If stored correctly and you keep your house free of humidity by using air conditioning you should be OK.
OK RD66 WITHOUT any fancy toning
You should ask her if she lives on the beach, and whether or not she sometimes opens the windows to let in the sea breeze. That would be the environment I would be concerned about.
I would go RB for saftie's sake.
..... but I can be satisfied by one good pretender than a so-so 55/55

I like it RD and NOT BR @topstuff
I was the under bidder on this one at GC's a few years back. I still hate that I missed owning it.
DDO1 for sure.
That's a nasty miss @bolivarshagnasty
Hello there ..... did you get my PM?
Personally, I don't think the holder needs to be an OGH or fatty NGC. Sticking with anything pre-prong would definitely make me feel better, and there seems to be quite a few 1972 DDOs out there in older holders. A newer holder would not be a deal breaker for me, but there is always that small chance it could turn as a result of mishandling which has yet to become visible. Time is your friend.
Good luck!
I would go after #1, but be careful and store it in a safe dry place. One of my friends lived along the coast in Florida a few years back and had a 1787 copper with a lot of red on it. It started turning colors on him because of the tropical client so he ended up getting rid of the coin.
Nope
It's very hard to find one that good; at higher grade even ..... and the RD/RB is very elusive unless your willing to shell up to $1800
IIRC, I stopped bidding at $6250.
OMG .... I kind of glad you stopped at that point. That is a monster price....so pardon my statement

I want both the 72 and the 55 for my variety type set. Wheat and memorial.
Get one if the COWBOYS get their championship trophy
give me an hour and I think I can come up with one... scattered but doabble with pics
Should I follow you to BST?
first look at my file and kinda new here with
DDO 1 for the 72. If you find one that meets your qualifications, get it. It will be hard to protect from humidity unless you take precautions. Climate control is expensive and will stop with power outages. We never have those, right?
Let me offer an alternative. Inexpensive and effective, not affected by power, long lasting. I have used this to protect 1868 Baseball cards I got when my grandfather died in the early sixties. They were fragile and subject to fading from early photography technology. They survived just as I got them, by my memory of decades ago.
After my stent I decided to sell them because anybody that got them wouldn't appreciate what the were. These were some of the earliest Baseball cards (technically cabinet cards approximately the same size as modern cards) known. They were of my home town team and they were the powerhouse of their day. One card showed baseballs mounted on a plaque, game balls in essence, with writing memorializing the games, This one ball I remember distinctly showed a cumulative score of what appeared to be a tournament. 118 - 7.
Anyway, I guess I should tell you the technique. Seal-A-Meal. Each card was individually sealed inside it's custom fitted sleeve. No deterioration what so ever. Of course I kept them in an envelope in a dark closet too. The Seal-A-Meal plastic didn't obscure looking at them at all being transparent, thicker and stiffer than zip lock bags and can be tightly fit to the slab.
This should work for a special slabbed coin you want to protect from the environment.
There were 13 cards that sold at auction back in mid 2007. I got $18,000 with no auction fees. They were highlighted on the first pages of the auction catalog. I listened in by phone as they were put to the bidding. My heart was pounding as the bids kept rising. I was offered $5,000 before I decided to go the auction route. They got a write up in the home town paper too. Boy was I grinning.
This is off topic but the technique would make humidity a none issue.
Oh I really love the good success story like yours @Kudbegud ..... especially they were handed down to you by your grandfather and he was actually looking out for you
Welcome to the CU family
still looking have many ...ok
Just a thought ...@Paradisefound.
You could with some looking
probably pick up a 66RB/RD of one of the "lesser" doubled dies....and likely still have enough left over for a nice 64RB of die 1.
55/55?
If you are vigilant and patient you should be able to find the 72 AND the 55
If I wanted a DDO, instead of spending hundreds for a 72, I would wait and keep the money for a 55 (or a 16 buffalo)
That Buffalo is a little more than a 72 or 55
There is a "bargain" AU58 though

I'm on every night at 11pm - 3am im gonna make a list of 5 only, no rush just check back in sat or sun or email me. k
I would save and get a 55/55 in 63RB. You'll be so happy having it and looking at the dramatic doubling !!!
I would go with a nice brown coin.
They are much cheaper than a red but the real reason is a red coin is much more likely to develop carbon spots.
If that happens you would HATE your once pretty and expensive coin.
It would then become an UGLY but really cheap coin for the next owner.
JMHO,,,,,,,
One of these years I might pick up a nice DDO. I think I would save for the 55 and do it right the first time.
For some reason I went for Die 2-9 as I already had the big one.
