That is the right attitude to have. It’s your hobby, your money, and your collection. Enjoy!
The only things I really think about that I don't have are either (a) things I had the opportunity to buy and missed or (b) the few things I would love to have in my collection but don't. It's really not about money because I focus on things that are in my budget, so it's more about opportunity.
I totally agree and I believe that is the only attitude to have. All collections are only in our trust for a short time until they are passed on to someone else. To think that owning any coins makes someone special or famous beyond the scope of a few coin nerds, is very funny.
All glory is fleeting.
I collect on the Dark Side. I am very happy with what I have so far. I do get
disappointed when I am out bid on something that I think will improve my
collection. Tough to take when I put in a bid 5x upper estimate and I wasn't
even in the ballpark. Would be nice to have Mr. Hansen's means every once
in a while.
I think what Mr. Hansen is doing is phenomenal! Talk about swinging the bat!
My sentiments exactly, you are the only person you have to satisfy.

Kind of depends on what you mean by "care".
Using your definition, I'm on board. I don't care that I don't have what you have....
By another possible definition....I DO care what others are collecting, and what they achieve, because it's part of the fun of sharing the collecting experience. Someone recently finished(!) a Seated Dime set, and I cared! It made me happy for him, and gave me hope that I may someday finish one or more of my (dozen) goals!
Good on ya! I figure I can get what I can afford, and specialize in it. Learn about all of the varieties and oddities. That way you are the master of your destiny.
Ah, but with Hansen's wealth comes wealth problems. I don't want any part of those.
Buy the best you can when you can. Dream and make them reality as you can. Envy of what others have is a dead end that doesn't turn out well.
No
With internet money out there it could be more than 29 years ago. Wild guess 10 to 20 thousand? To high? Probably less.
I don't care what others can buy, what others do buy or what others will buy. Numismatics is nice, but in the end it's just another "thing". Be happy and enjoy the journey.

I like when rich people show their coins, that's the only way I'll see them....

I totally agree. I collect what interest me. I'm not envious of what others collect. I'm very happy with what I have and my purchases !!!

I don't always appreciate how lucky I am to have a little extra money that allows me to buy coins and enjoy this hobby.
I'm with TomB, "things" aren't even on the long list of what's important in this brief journey: family, health, personal and financial security, freedom....

I love that! Like when people ask if I have pets, I tell them yeah sure but they run free in my house and yard: bunnies, squirrels, birds, spiders, and more.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PF!!!
I care that someone is able to maintain and protect those fab coins that I will only ever be able to see photos of. Congrats to them. I would also be a nervous wreck maintaining their security and storage and probably still only be able to enjoy them from photos.
I do NOT care that that person is not me. I love my coins and when I buy that special coin I need or just want, I become so excited and nearly overcome by pride(bad I know) and I wouldn't give that feeling up for all the money in the world. To have someone else hunt down and offer me the coin I've been wanting would ruin the whole hobby for me.
As I said, congrats to those who do purchase and protect these coins, but I'll enjoy my taste of the hobby.

I enjoy what I have and only buy what I will enjoy.... I experience vicarious pleasure when viewing some special coins here on the forum...but not envy. The pleasure is in the viewing and history...with either the coins I possess or those shown here and at coin shows. I have found, long ago, that possession is a short lived pleasure...Cheers, RickO
I'm happy with my dreck and widgets.
I enjoy the process. My original interest in US coinage was how it fit into US history, the idealistic images and aspirations, the fascinating grading system and process. No envy, every person has their own responsibilities connected to what they own, "to whom much is given much will be required". I was a little taken aback when I heard someone use that line as I was doing volunteer work in hurricane devastated areas, people who had more or less lost everything were still grateful. Proper perspective and gratitude can go a long way toward orderly living.
I am very satisfied with what I have, do I envy others with better coins? Not really. I am happy for them and I enjoy seeing their coins. I am very content with my situation.

I want them all...send them to me!
Generally I don't care what the upper crust has. They have coins that I can't afford, and that is okay because each of us has a niche. I enjoy what I have and usually hold on to it unless I get an up-grade or on rare occasions have lost interest in something.
I am interested in what the upper crust has with respect to condition census information. If I am able to get a coin that is close to what they have, I think that I have done well. For example the finest known 1796 Quarter Eagle is a PCGS MS-65. I have one that I would grade MS-60 or 61. That tells me that I have done as well as I can.
I only get upset when the upper crust makes a point of denigrating other people’s coins. For example, if you make statements like, “The only coins that are any good are in holder X which have sticker Y; everything else is ‘dreck’,” you have stepped over the line. It’s okay to beat your own drum about how good your collection is, but it’s not okay to condemn other people’s material, especially when you are doing it for your own financial advantage.
Well said. In addition, let me say that I do not envy your 1921 Peace Dollar.
No I don't.
Not one liddle bit!
It's only a coin. Yes. That's what it is. And it's yours! And not for sale. Nope. Solidly ensconced in your exclusive possession.
I DO NOT ENVY IT ONE DANG LITTLE BIT !!!!

To me, the connotation of 'envy' includes a bad-vibe thing and I don't feel that... but topstuf's post is keeping me honest, because I often see something that someone else has and think, "I wish I had one of those!"
Hope you had / have an awesome birthday!

Some people on this forum probably care more about what the upper crust doesn't have. Find it and sell it to them at "money is no object" prices before someone else does!
Nope as knowledge beats a fatter wallet in this hobby every time.
Great insight by PF.
I am fine with the high rollers and wish them luck. But I am mostly not jealous of them. Sometimes I am not even sure they really like the trophies they buy.
One of my favorite coins cost me 5 cents. It is a nickel that was struck in 2015 and then struck again in 2016. Double struck, in two different years. I found it in a roll of new nickels. I will never sell it and admit that part of the fun of owning it is knowing that while it has an estimated value that many could afford to pay, it is almost certainly unique and therefore no one else can own one. Not Bill Gates, or Warren Buffett, or this Hansen character.
I also have some niche coin and currency collections where I don't spend much on my new additions. I keep a look out for new examples and then chase them as they appear. In the case of the currency I collect, there are few if any other serious collectors of it, so I usually don't have much serious competition. I feel like Mr. Hansen in that I always win the auctions but the top price I have ever paid was just over $100, and that is a serious outlier compared to what the rest of my collection has cost me.
It's good to be the King. And anyone can be the King of their own little self-created Kingdom.
Coins are similar to my other hobby, classic cars. There is always someone with a more well optioned, higher factory HP, etc etc than you. I enjoy what I have, with the pride that I built them myself.
You mean, most of us are all under water with our coins?

Thanks to the folks spending the big $$ (and also many people spending smaller $), it helps make many things financially feasible which the rest of us can enjoy at no cost, such as:
I enjoy looking at great photos of those "Wow!" coins, shared for free on the web.
I don't feel a need to own them myself.
