OK, so what did I miss? (StG gold OH NGC CAC)

After getting getting my Arse handed to me by CAC on my gold ( did much better on Silver and especially mint state copper) I bid on the following generic ( i thought) gold piece to work on my eye, and to stack some gold at the current low prices.

https://greatcollections.com/Coin/656416/1911-D-Saint-Gaudens-Gold-Double-Eagle-NGC-MS-64-CAC-OH

I thought it was nice, and bid $1405 hammer expecting that there was a realistic chance of me getting it. It hammered at $2609, $2935 all in. Isn't that MS65+ territory? PCGS priceguide for MS 64 is $1700.

    Friday's wholesale on 65 Saints was $1520. But that's not CAC'ed.
That coin looks pretty nice for 64. Not what the bulk traded 64s look like.

Nothing. Someone for some reason wanted it and bid with their heart, not their head. That is ok if they are happy with it. Just try another, there are plenty more out there.

I’d rather have two generic 63’s / 64’s that that one coin at the price.

3 bidders liked it, who cares why just hope 3 people like them like yours when you sell

It doesn't look like a 65 to me, but there are plenty of coins that will upgrade over current grade if cracked, that even cac rejects based on whatever criteria they are using.

This happens... auction fever likely. There are many others out there, so just move on...bet you get one for the price you want.... Good luck... come back and tell us when you do. Cheers, RickO

  • Your bid of $1,405 wasn't going to win this coin under any circumstances! Had you increased your bid just $200, I would have given you a great chance of winning. Obviously this coin brought a bidding war! but how often does this occur on a relatively common date 64? Perhaps someone wanted the old NGC fatty holder?

I think this event had much to do with obtaining CAC gold.

Might be the D/D but who cares at that level. Common coin in uncommon holder combo but still, bididiot

Might be a 66 with a bit of a weak strike. 66s with stars or pluses go for twice as much.

I’m putting my bet on it being an old holder and someone thinking upgrade.

    11-D 64 at $2600 ???
    People are going CAC silly.
Check out this thread (11-D RPM MS64) for $2260 and WAY better looking

That is a low B CAC in a NGC holder that I would not consider a 64+ & much less rare than a D/D.
