MARKET RESEARCH/Curiosity: How did you learn about CU?

Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

Lots of new members join CU every week. It seems some are just starting out as collectors and others have been collecting for years.
Some non-collectors join to post coins they just found. I'm curious. How do folks find online coin forums? I'm very late to the party as I can remember my friend Dave Lange was posting in the 1980s!

QUESTION: How did you learn about the existence of CU.

Manofcoins sent me a link 15 years ago and noted that this was a quality forum. He didn't warn me about the Open Forum though.

I joined the NGC registry in 2005, since I could enter both my NGC and PCGS slabs at that time, then finally joined their chat boards in 2009 after lurking for 4 years.

A lot of people talked about CU, over there, so I eventually migrated here in 2011.

I used to be active both places but, now, I spend more time here, because there's more activity. I still visit over there from time to time.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

I was using the Google to research coin condition and some errors, when archived CU comments cued up in the search results. Good thing I took the bait. I have learned so much. Peace

Found it like Columbus found the Americas.

Was looking for information one evening and did not know where I was going. When I got here I didn't know where I was, and when I left I didn't know where I had been.

I honestly can't remember how I found CU.

I have been here since April 2002.

I do remember that there were only like 2500 Registry Sets at the time I joined. Now there are 97,707 sets. :o:o:o:o:o

When I came back into numismatics, after a long stint away, I went to the internet for some simple info and found RCC (rec.collections.coins). Stayed there for an amount of time, was only doing raw coins but started to hear about "slabbed" coins and "graded" coins, but wasn't into those right away. Once I got enough of the bickering, and had learned "most" of what I could there, and having heard about "here", I started visiting both. After awhile, I finally decided to join/post here...after months of just being a watcher/reader.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I came here during my brief early-2000s flirtation with the Set Registry.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

In the late '90's, in conversation with some other 'coinheads', I mentioned there should be some collector sites for coins on this place called the internet. Some agreed, some said the www would be a passing fad... I decided to look... Voila'...I found CU.... Yes, have been on others, but this is home. Cheers, RickO

I had been collecting coins (on and off) since the late 60s, but had sort of checked out of the hobby by the time the TPG started their business dealings.

When my father showed me his collection, many of which were PCGS slabbed coins, I was amazed.

Shortly after he passed away in 1995, the coins in his collection came to me, I needed to find out what this trend was all about. It was another couple years before I found the web site, forums and all the family feuds to be had.

In August I resolved to become more serious and knowledgeable in coin collecting -- so I visited a local coin show (asking dealers to help bring me up to speed) and was exploring resources on the the 'Net. My googling led me to this forum. After reading it for a few days, I thought this would be a good place to follow discussions and to ask the occasional newbie questions I didn't see answered.

    I joined in September.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

I was up late one night, stumbled upon PCGS.COM and I started reading the forum comments.

Liked what I saw and joined.

I started as a mostly bullion and mint set collector in the early nineties. Around 2007 when I bought my first PCGS coin I found cointalk. Spent a while there then joined here and NGC forums in 2009. Mostly just lurk. Unless I feel my brand of smarta$$ is needed in a post.

Was a member over at the NGC boards and everyone kept talking about "across the street " so just like the chicken, I had to cross and see for myself. Haven't looked back. ...... .

When I would look for answers to my coin questions online, this and some others forums would show up. I found so many indepth answers on CU that I decided to join.

I cannot remember, it has been almost 17 years. Probably mentioned by another Barber Half collector who wanted to chat and knew this would be a better venue than Ebay.

I had stumbled across the site several years ago while researching early Jefferson varieties, most likely reverse of 38 vs 40.
I cannot recall having joined or not, probably not, although when I became much more involved with graded set building a few years ago @BigDowgie set me a link referring me here and you folks have been stuck with me ever since ;)

I found the forums via internet search engine around 1999-2000 and lurked for several years before finally joining.

Internet search (browser cache/cookies are purged after end of every session). There were three that came up the most frequently CT, CCF, and CU.
