Hi all-
Bought a crusty set of Morgan Dollars...liked the look and always leave them as I get them....
Hearing a lot about how tight grading is....
GTG and let's see if too tight, too loose, or just right....

Threw in a Virginia Half Cent that came back in same batch....thoughts...

**
Great eyes....know these are not "guesses", but informed opinions based on the pictures provided...I personally thought both were under graded (looking through the owner bias lens usually produces that result), because in-hand great eye appeal. The Virginia half cent, is really, really nice...the "rub" is not nearly as pronounced as the picture and the I think it is more of a coloration difference as the coin sat in a small manila folder for 40 or 50 years. Anyhow VG 10 on the Morgan, AU 55 on the half penny....a nearly perfect planchet and good color probably got it the higher grade...

Thanks for looking....**

Enjoy the holiday!

    I would grade the 1889-CC Morgan as a VG-10. It's a nice circualted coin.

The Virginia half penny is an AU-50. Many of these coins are known in R&B Mint State from a hoard that cropped up many years ago. Perhaps it has something to do with the advertising, but it seems to be harder to find these coins in the circulated grades than Mint State.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

First thought upon seeing the Morgan was that it would grade VG10 but after maybe 2 minutes of scrutiny (which is too long I think) and especially due to the reverse I am thinking our hosts graded this one as F12.
I have no idea on the Colonial and defer to @BillJones for his opinion.

The 89cc Morgan is probably a 10 but could squeak out a 12 on a good day. Obv is a weak 10, rev is a solid 12. Together probably a 10.

I’d call the Virginia halfpenny XF or XF-AU. Decent surfaces and pleasing color but a lot of rub on the face and wreath. There are many different varieties known but it’s a series that doesn’t do much for me. Go to the Newman portal and look up the Stack’s Ford sale that included the Virginia 1/2p. You should be able to figure out the variety if you so desire. I know that a couple of people are very into this coinage by variety but generally it is something that is collected by type. These are usually found in Uncirculated condition or are low end dogs.

VG10 & XF45 by current standards. The Virginia piece would probably been called XF40 back in the early 1980's. The Morgan has excellent eye appeal for the grade.

    The 89-CC is at least a 12, perhaps 15.

VG 10 because I like the Morgan dollar. It doesn't appear to have any major marks on rims or distractions just BLENDING

    VF 30 on the Virginia

I'm easy, I like them both. The Virginia a little more cause I dig them up on occasion. Although they're not in very good condition.

Is grade deflation as bad as grade inflation?
