Bring back the old Anacs small slab?

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,072 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm surprised with the focus on retro holders, that no one has brought back the minimalist Anacs small white slab? Were there any problems with those?

Yeah, I really liked the old small white ones from the early 90s if that is what you are referring to.

I liked them too. The width was 2" and they would fit nicely in standard coin boxes designed to hold flips and 2x2"s. They could handle all US coins with the exception of the Pan-Pac $50 gold slugs.

My understanding is that the old white and Blue label Anacs slabs have no grade guarantee like the gold ones have.

Yup, I have a bunch of the old ANACS holders. I really like them. Wish they kept it around longer !!! :)

Loved those days. The nickname for these is soapbox. At the time I had suggested keep the holders just redo the graphics for a more modern look but they wanted to be more like the other tpg’s. Oh well life marches on

These early ANA holders are conservatively graded ( mostly) and worth a premium IMO. Back in the day the later ANA were considered loosely graded.

I was thinking the thread title could be: will PCGS ever issue a smaller slab? (Because these huge ones take up sooooo much room)!

Here's a consecutive serial numbered pair of ANA holders I picked up at a show earlier this year. I just couldn't break them up.

On draw back was that there were limits as to what ANACS could put into them. I don't think that they could slab the $50 gold slugs and the Pan-Pac commemorative $50 gold coins because they were too large.

While I love the small convenient size of the old small holders, the downside is the are so easy to break. Drop one on a concrete floor at a show and you will see what I mean.

It probably wouldn't be that expensive to duplicate the best features of the old white holders, make the plastic harder, go past the copyrights with a slightly different holder, and give collectors the option at least for a few bucks extra. ICG could do that I would think.

Is this considered ANACS small slab?

I have a few Morgan$, slabbed and raws. I don't usually collect error coins and/or varieties but wanted to know how to check for VAM-1 designation on this coin. Just a curiosity so any information from Morgan variety expert out there, I would appreciate your input and looking forward to learn from you. Thanks.

Something tells me anacs isn't certifying many $50 Pan-Pacs anyway. They could have offered a special oversized holder much like the other major TPGS's and kept the nice small holder, seems like it is universally liked.

Not an issue with the 99.9% of the coin collectors who will never own a Pan-Pac $50 gold slug. There's also a limit as to what PCGS and NGC slabs can house as far as US coins are concerned. They both had to create special oversized slabs for the 5 oz silver ATB series of coins.

I own dozens of the original small white ANACS slabs. Mainly SLQs, Barber material, and some off-center Indian Cents. Love the little white 'coffins'. Can't bring myself to cross them over to PCGS plastic.

ANACS should have NEVER moved to their new holders, which are completely unappealing to me.

Is ANACS even the same company when comes to the new holders?
    Edited for typo.

If you send in the old Anacs white holders, they will not put them in their gold holders but blue ones, due to ownership issues.

Thought so I remember reading something about a swap of people with another grading firm.

ICG is the "new" ANACS. And ANACS is the "new" ICG if I'm not mistaken.

How will my ANACS-certified coins be reholdered?
On January 1, 2008 ANACS, under its new ownership, relocated from Austin, Texas to suburban Denver. Coins that were certified by ANACS under previous ownership will be reholdered in ANACS's blue label. Coins that were certified since January 1, 2008 under the new ownership, will be reholdered using ANACS's gold label.

Why would you want to reholder a small ANACS slab?

Why in the heck did ANACS fall by the wayside?
ANACS had the best holder EVER (AFAIC), so maybe it happened to do with.....?
