What’s your “side collection” of coins, if any?

My main collection is gold, and I am working on a complete type set.

Unfortunately I spent years building our new house, and I wanted no payments, so it was a large cash deal. That is all clear now, but I ended up having more daughters 😝

So when I am “bored” I am picking up nickels like crazy. I’m not sure why but I like liberty and shield nickels.

What’s your secret side collection?

Here’s my favorite liberty and shield nickel proof:

    1. 19th century presidential campaign tokens.

    2. At least one coin for each British king or queen. I have been having a lot of fun writing a “bullet book” with the history of each monarch. I posted one version here, but it’s in constant revision.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

For myself, I currently am focusing on completing 20th century sets, and so far I have not strayed from that objective. If I have a "side" activity, it is working with my grandson and niece (both in grade school) getting them started with Lincolns. That might not be an impressive side collection, but it's planting seeds as my dad did with me.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

I am still upgrading my albums of Lincolns, Buffalo Nickels, Roosevelt Dimes, and US Type. I actually spend a lot of time with the latter since so many coins could potentially belong so I'm not sure that quite qualifies as a side collection.

I collect old gold, silver dollars and old proofs. With an occasional venture into nickels, such as:

Working on a US type set 1793-2000 with major & minor varieties.
92% complete, need a dozen very tough coins, we all know the ones: 1793 copper, 1796 silver, 1795 gold. High relief saint, $4 stellas. $50 pan pacs.

Not so secret, but side project is currently draped bust quarters and halves by die variety and die state, and select colonials & territorials. Also slow going..

Have idle sets of Franklins, Washingtons, Peace dollars & Ikes, indians & Lincolns, Jeffersons & buffalos, a near complete Galkery mint set, some ancients, and bags of foreign.

What is the link to your set, @Bailey ?

I have a nice Stella, eyeing legends pan pac round they have up. But FUN around the corner makes it hard.

My main squeeze is a US type set in PCGS dress,
    my side collection(s) would be:
a Philippines type set (whitman album)
a Canadian large cent set (Whitman album)
Ancients in plastic (this is a pretty new direction for me, so I don't know what the limiting parameters will be

    No side collection of coins.

I do collect (and read) paperback novels of Clyde Cussler.

Easy reads, good cast of characters and fun story lines (history in the background; with current day events portrayed on a global scale; plenty of fact paced action; good guys; bad guys; in between guys; and much "daring do").

    Toys, Guns, knives, bonsai

Toys are the most fun. Bonsai is in the respect that the fun is in the working on them. :)

My firearm collection....That really is not a 'side collection'... More like a major focus... in my case, coins and knives would be side collections....Then of course come decks of old playing cards, marbles and challenge coins....Probably a couple more collections as well. ;) Cheers, RickO

I have a few side sets of incomplete planchets as well but they're too close to my main theme to count for this thread.

Lately I have been poking around for world varieties, and I still get the occasional urge to search eBay for better CPG varieties. There are also a couple of CWTs that I look for by die state, not sure how that started but I probably have enough now to call them a "collection" too.

    Sean Reynolds

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Some good stuff here! Didn’t think I’d get so many responses.

Outside of coins I don’t collect much of any one thing, but have a lot of smaller collections (e.g 10-100 nice items, depending on size and price). Cars take up a lot of room. 😝

Circulated Morgan and Peace Dollars, Large Cents, and Foreign Silver at the moment. When I get sick of them, I just sell them and pick another series that is interesting to me at that time. This has always kept me interested in collecting over the years and allowed me to focus on an eclectic mix of different types. At one time or another I have done most U.S. coinage.

My "side" collecting has evolved into Charlotte Half Eagles. When I first joined the boards, it was my primary interest, until I got bit by the early gold (early Turban & Capped Bust gold) bug. When it first bit, I had an almost complete set of Charlotte gold - $1 thru $5's. I sold many of them, particularly the $1 and $2 1/2's, with several of my HEs also being let go. I've been slowly building the HE collection back up, and plug a hole every now and then. Here are a couple of the most recent additions.

    Got Crust....y gold?

Side collection. :) I'll start with the smaller calibers, a couple of 22's and work my way up to a 458 if there's any interest.

These are only ~50 years old so they are almost new when compared to my coins.

I also go from 22 (Colt Woodsman), then through .454, 475 Linebaugh and .500 S&W- just handguns.
