1837 Impulse purchase...

I was out buying a little silver the other day and this was laying around...
It fits right in with my "don't need another widget junker laying around collection"

It's hard for me to resist those too.

Believe it or not, I think that coin is actually rare in that condition. I don’t recall seeing very many well wore 1837 Reeded Edge half dollars.

The reverse shows why Gobrecht revisited the design. In 1837 the protective rim was too low, and the lettering was shallow. It was obvious that the letters were way too delicate to survive that long in circulation. In 1838, the rims were higher, and lettering was larger and bolder.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Would look great in what I call a "bag", "loose" or "period" type set: a group of well worn coins, all within, say, 1820-1870, that looks like pocket change, perhaps stored in a small, antique bag, purse, box, or tin.
