Anyone care to take a guess at the grade our host gave this 93S Morgan? Answer to be posted sometime Friday.

(Post edited on Friday 12/14/18 - it's a 53) I'll be sending it and ~19 other coins off to CAC in late January.

    AU 58 !

Care to stop showing off ??

    LOL ...........

That has a great original, wholesome look to it for that grade!
I'll guess AU53. Each of those AU grade steps is crazy expensive for this coin.

Congrats on getting a beauty as the flagship to your Morgan set.

AU Details either altered surfaces or cleaned! Could be the picture!

Edit after I enlarged the picture it's counterfeit!

Damn, an almost AU55 93s. Looks 54.5 to me, would that make it a TPG 53+ or possibly a 53 with one of those little green stickers. Is it the real dealio or Chinese/Russian? Lulz Congrats!!!!!!!!

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Three denticles from the point of the truncation and then a denticle directly under the numeral 1..........lest the chinese got really good at this.

delusion is suppose to be a joke

The date slopes up the R is missing the inner foot the T has the die break line . That view of the word Liberty is an optical delusion. Blown up the picture has a certain posterization to it

It’s a tough call because the photos don’t show the luster if there is any. If there is little or no luster, it’s an AU-50 on the holder, or an EF-45. If there is luster it could go as high as AU-55, but the 1893-S dollar in AU should have more detail on the eagle’s breast feathers.

I'll give ya that but I'm not seeing the diagnostic die scratches in Liberty and the pictures seem to be good enough to be able to see them. I need to see it in hand now to render judgement!

XF 45 due to lack of luster and breast detail.

  • lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,576 ✭✭✭✭✭

Is the "1" in the date supposed to be centered over a denticle? I don't see the die gouge in LIBERTY either...

There's that, and I'm also seeing a greenish hue around the rims of the obverse and greenish spots over the ear... PVC?

without seeing this coin in hand, I'd say AU55.... maybe a details coin...

I'm looking at it now. The 1 is in the right place, the raised 3 is correct, etc. The die scratch in the T is easily seen with a 10x loop but not in the picture. (my bad photography skills)

That's interesting comment on the die scratch though. I have had (and still have a few) 93S and I've always been able to see the "scratch" in the T "except for one" of them. (I often needed a loop to see the scratch on some) All I had were certified by either NGC or PCGS but there was a VG10 that I "once had that I could not see it no matter what I used or how many times I looked at it... All the other diagnostics were there but I couldn't see the scratch. :s I just couldn't live with that one even if it was in a PCGS slab.

Well... I will go with the 53 crowd on this one... The Eagle's breast feathers seem to be very worn.... unusual when compared to the rest of the coin... IMO... Cheers, RickO

Glad you can see it. I've had several 93-S's and I was able to get the die scratch to show in my pictures. I don't have an expensive fancy camera either!

Please let us know how it goes. The surfaces are hard to evaluate from those photos, but nothing jumps out as being problematic. The "meat" of the coin is all there. Unless there is something hidden in the photos, I think it should bean.

For what it is worth (and to the OP's advantage), CAC treats AU50 and AU53 equivalently.
