1999-2008 Proof Sets Question

TunisTunis Posts: 471 ✭✭✭✭

Unfortunately my father’s health has taken a really bad turn for the worse. My mother will be hiring a care giver to come to the home. I ran across these and decided to take them back to my place. Figured they were better with me for the time being. Can anybody shed some light on how these were purchase in this form and why the Mint sold them in this manner? Anything special I should be looking out for? Thanks for your help in advance.

"Anything special I should be looking out for?"

Made in China?!?!? That might be a good place to start.

The U.S. Mint did not well these sets in this way. The mint issued them on an annual basis, and once the year had changed, or the coin ses were sold out, that was it. The Mint System did not hold old sets back and sell complete date runs in a block like this. This has to have been some sort of private distribution series.

Have you looked at the coins to see that they are there? I am not aware that the Chinese have made any copies of these coins. In many instances it would not be worth their while, at least in recent years. The 1999 and 2001 silver (red background holder) sets used to be expensive, but the prices have been falling for a while.

I don’t know what company might have offered this, but I’m sure it was not the United States Government.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Thank you BillJones. I researched recent sales on EBay and they seem to sell well in this manner but I am not interested in selling, just looking for info

Those look like aftermarket cases for annual sets.

Yeah, that top photo is odd. These certainly are made in the USA! The sets are collectable -- search year by year on eBay for market prices. Every year will vary as the number of coins included will vary.
You have the beginnings of a fun collection!

The top picture looks like it is a shipping box for the chipboard proof set boxes. The boxes were sold separately by the mint and probably that is why it says made in China. Looks to be the right size to fit eight of them.

    Agree with the others.
The USMint sold them separately (the smaller, quarter only, sets as well.

3rd party sellers, such as the TV shows, etc, would then bundle things up and sell them at high prices. That is likely what was done here.

At one point in time, the 1999 silver proof set was selling for close to $500 by itself. It has since come down quite a bit. The 2001 was the next highest set of that grouping.

So, just going by the pics you posted, the boxes of each set look like the ones the mint sold. The big, outer, brown, box looks like something NON-USMint (done by 3rd party, made in china obviously) for some after sales.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I do not doubt what is stamped on the boxes are correct but I would double check. Some pics of the plastic mint cases?

I think this would make a good start to a collection.

The 1999 silver proof set still brings a premium but the others are little more than the value of the silver. The market is flooded with proof sets of these dates and you are likely to find disinterest from dealers when trying to sell them. This is the voice of experience speaking. I have sold two complete runs of the State Quarters era silver proof sets in the past few months. The non-silver proof sets will bring very little.

    All glory is fleeting.

Definitely check the contents of the boxes.... The silver sets (other than the 1999) will bring a bit better than melt anyway, if you were going to sell. Otherwise, you have a nice foundation for a collection, and they are your Dad's coins too....so a family tie there. Cheers, RickO

Thanks to all for the replies. I should have picked up on the China box before posting. Lol. This pretty much is how my father purchased coins. They will be staying in the family. I also brought home. Littleton Green album much like the Brown Dansco, filled with a run of Ikes, including proofs, and also a Littleton album filled with a run of ASEs. He also liked Sacajaweas 🙁. Have a ton of them as well.

The U.S. Mint DID sell some sort of a box to hold ten Proof sets 1999-2008, but they became useless when the Presidential dollars came out in 2007 in a third plastic shell, and the sets became thicker and ten sets no longer fit.

These are probably the official U.S. Mint Boxes. They may well have been printed in China. Perhaps he ordered multiples boxes from the Mint, and the Mint used the original shipping case from the printer to ship two or more of the boxes to your father.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it. Check each set for authentic coins. These sets are in sealed slabs. Tampering or weird groupings is a tip off. Use the Google and our hosts site for research. Buy a 2019 red book in spiral so you can price out each set and learn more about the coin sets in the process. Have fun. Peace Roy
