Common Coins with Uncommon Appearance

CatbertCatbert Posts: 8,196 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am a type collector and thus appreciate many of our coin designs. My collecting approach is not influenced by mintage rarity, but rather by the coin's condition and natural toned appearance. As such, I collect coins that are readily available (usually in uncirculated state), but have some other attribute that makes them distinctive (or uncommon) to my eye.

Here are a few coins from my collection that meet that personal standard. Please post yours that you feel are common, but may really be uncommon!

Mintage 79.6M

Mintage 7M (readily available and, yes golden toned versions of this date may be very common - an exception to my strategy? :o )

Mintage 12M

Mintage 10 M

Gorgeous group of coins! The dime is the eye appeal winner for me, with that cameo appearance. The cent is a close second with those colors. 👍🖖

Great looking coins @Catbert Years back I decided to do a toned type set and I'm doing
pretty much as you have. Coins are chosen by nice clean looking and excellent eye appeal.
My toned type set is in my sig line but I'm always adding to it.

1925 Peace dollars are the opposite of rare, but it’s rare for them to look like that beauty!

Here's one more. At 8.1 Billion, this has the highest mintage of my favorites. Not too many dates up in that range.

I love the look of the coins in this thread!
    For this photo
All of these old coins seem to have some sort of white haze all over the design and letters, with clear mirror like fields.
I have a dremel tool, maybe we can polish them to a uniform chrome surface appearance... ;)

All nice coins, but this had me reflecting upon my youth and a motorcycle, a road, and my leg. :'(
