Exonumia Guy buys a Coin... A Tougher Than Nails Tab Toned Early Commem :)

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is my only actual COIN purchase for 2018... A superb gem tab toned 1936 York which in nearly 33 years of collecting or just admiring this series I've never encountered with toning worthy of any sort of excitement. I have to also thank Broadstruck Jr. for ripping my iPhone out of my hands while in the waiting room of a radiologist fully assisting me in making good ole Dad's first ever cell phone purchase.

Enjoy! :)

Nice. Are they playing baseball outside the fort? Or giving differing directions to the horseback rider?

Sorry, an attempt at weak humor lol :)

Ha... Since this was a tough coin to photograph and I spent a lot of time gawking at it through the viewfinder the notion of "Baseball" also crossed my mind :D

Interesting! Same coin. The first pic looks like the figure on the left is holding a bat. The second looks like it is pointing west.

    Angles, lighting, and suggestion.

This is a great example for pareidolia.

Shot at the same everything just rotated the slab to get all the color to pop.

The first shot was straight on and a bit sharper on the men, but the second shot the roof lines and eaves are sharper.

That is a great find for those who love tarnish....If not already slabbed, do so quickly, or it may continue and change to something you do not care for. Cheers, RickO

@Broadstruck Good to know. This is a keeper post as a prime example for pareidolia. 👍 :)

    It's already slabbed...

I stay away from the very darkly toned coins, as I've seen them continually tone over the years even in slabs approaching terminal state.

Would have needed more lighting, but didn't feel like setting up the 300 watt Kaiser halogens as you need to act fast or they can burn your hands. .

Actually not as giving this a bit more thought...

Last year I photographed a complete set of full split band Mercury dimes. Shooting the reverse straight on not all looked FSB. Most had to be rotated so the lighting ventured between both bread loaves.

That's why I feel that anyone purchasing coins online based on digital images should experiment with coin photography just for a better understanding on how to interpret photos.

40 years as a pro - I'd call it A++ in eye appeal. Bravo B)

Is it from the 5-coin lot in the New England auction by Brian Hendelson that brought $75,000+ and produced the MS69?

No this is in an older non pronged blue label PCGS MS67 holder....

Which means it could very well be a MS69 today?!? ;)

Would you happen to have a link to the auction and/or an image of this MS69?

Here's the MS69 which was produced from the original holder which held 5.

A York with toning has always been underrated as even Larry Shepherd in his 1991 sale didn't have a major color example in his main set nor all his duplicates.

I would not test that theory. I have had coins go down 2 grades recently. (Coins that would have gone up a grade last year.) And with your lovely coin, the risk of questionable would be even worse.

I don't plan on it as I would not have bought this for myself in a newer pronged holder. So MS67 is plenty as I have no desire to own it in a never slab even with a higher number on the label.

I love the colorful toned Yorks! At one point I had 4 67s and now have 2. Here is one of the ones I used to have - the pictures suck, but you get the idea!

    That's a SUPER example!!

    Rev:
Stockade (Browns Garrison on the Saco River, taken from an old wood-cut), within medallion. In foreground, four sentries – one on horseback. In background of stockade, the rising sun. LIBERTY curved, in gothic letters, superimposed on rays of sun. In lower foreground on scroll in Gothic letters: E – PLURIBUS – UNUM parallel to medallion. Around outer border, in very large Roman letters, both upper and lower inscriptions commencing at lower left: UNITED – STATES – OF – AMERICA and HALF – DOLLAR At base, near border of medallion, small incused script initials of designer: W.H.R.

You have great taste in toning. I too would be excited about that one and I’m kinda picky.
Nice pics too for a rookie👌🏻
